Okay, I'm stumped when does an adjective go after a noun, and when is it before? I tried putting stesso at the end here and got it wrong.

I think there is a list of which adjectives commonly go before the noun on another website, it might be the Italian.about.com website

In this case you could put the adjective after but it would change the meaning to something more like My mother works in the city proper
