Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

Perks for reaching new levels

Do you think it would be possible to have certain perks for reaching certain levels, just something as sort of a congratulations for reaching the next level, even something as small as an interesting cultural video clip. Reaching a new level seems a bit too anticlimactic and I know that achievements are not the point but it would be a nice little icing on the cake.

I like the idea of unlocking cultural videos. They really enhance your idea of the language, and I feel an even deeper appreciation for the language because now I can connect with it on a "real-world application" level.

I also lack Skinner box. I propose Duolingo be linked to Steam along with achievements, trading cards and a TF2 hat.

I want duolingo to play victorious sounding trumpets and have the whole site covered with ribbons and confetti slowly falling down :D Similar to those gimmicky snow flakes you see on some website during wintertime.

I always thought that duolingo needs an user pet and a shop with items and traits to customize the "pet". The coins would serve to "purchase" things for the mascot. Useless? In a strict sense, totally! But it'd make duolingo even more addictive. And you do have to learn to get coins, don't you?

So pretty much an avatar? Not a bad idea! When I was in the 8th grade I was participating in online school. I took German 1. My online class had an avatar that, if you complete the classes, you earn coins and could buy clothing and etc. It's a wonderful idea. Perhaps there should be an online Play Store, where we can customize avatar AND unlock cultural videos? I mean, we might as well do something with all those coins we earn!

I agree with the idea of a quick little video or something. I mean, yes, it is silly that as adults we need this. However, as a teacher I can tell you students will do anything for a sticker! I am competing with my friends, but I am SO far ahead of them it almost isn't a challenge.

Well they do give you that ribbon...But if there were things like certificates etc. (that you can actually keep on your profile) it could be more motivating...

I'd imagine acquiring the rights to these materials could be costly. I think it's also the reason Duolingo has text-to-speech synthesis instead of native speakers reading out phrases.

Duolingo is a free service. How do they even make money to maintain the site in the first place?

Honestly, what I want first is native speakers reading out the phrases even if that means placing advertisements on the site!

Duolingo lets you upload your own articles for translation by the community. If you do this for commercial benefit, then duolingo will charge you for it. see http://www.duolingo.com/translations/upload

I think i might've heard something about submitting audio in the new community language creation tools they're working on, don't quote me on that.

I would also like to see a perk for going past the "keyholes," as those are kind of major milestones.

I agree, VanJones. Learning a language isn't easy, and little "rewards" with certain levels would make us all feel good (and even more motivated).

I especially like this idea of cultural videos as a "reward" for attaining certain levels. For one thing, it would help counteract an inherent weakness in Duo, which is the brevity of phrases and sentences. How great would it be to listen in on real conversations, (perhaps even with subtitles in the language being studied?)

I wouldn't care for a video, personally. When I've seen that kind of thing on other software, I always wanted to skip through it.

We should win hats. Nothing else, just hats. Lots and lots of hats.
