Nijntje is a cheater? Meer dan één vriendje? :o

So in the Nijntje theme song, it says "Nijntje nijntje kom erbij met jouw vriendjes reuzenblij" and obviously vriendjes means "little friends" there but Google Translate and Duolingo say vriendje is boyfriend... So is Nijntje cheating on Boris Beer, Betje en Knorretje? Or does "vriendjes" also commonly mean 'little friends'?

"Vriendje" and "vriendinnetje" can also mean "little friend" and both are commonly used that way, especially when referring to children (or anthropomorphized animal children). It can be quite confusing for non-native speakers that there is no unique translation of "boyfriend" and "girlfriend". Another way to make it clear whether you are talking about a friend or a romantic partner, is the different uses of the possessive:

  • Ik ga naar de bioscoop met mijn vriend - I am going to the cinema with my boyfriend
  • Ik ga naar de bioscoop met een vriend van me - I am going to the cinema with a friend of mine

Ps. also note that having multiple partners does not necessary make you a cheater, as long as everybody involved is aware and happy with the situation.

Don't you just love the Dutch language?

Google the theme song for Bassie en Adriaan, a great way to learn Dutch. Maybe Nijntje has commitment problems or is just being the bunnyrabbit she is. An adult does not have a vriendje or vriendinnetje (unless used as term of endearment) they have "een relatie". Sounds so much more sophisticated. Keep up the good work!

The latter, obviously. Kijk hier: http://www.mijnwoordenboek.nl/vertaal/NL/EN/vriendje. By the way, nice that you watch Nijntje!

Does it more commonly mean boyfriend or buddies? Do people ever ask for clarification?

Its meaning can be derived from context. Assuming you are male: mijn vriendje would refer to your boyfriend, een/die vriend van me would refer to a male buddy, mijn vriendin would refer to your girlfriend, however een/die vriendin van me would refer to a (very) close female friend, usually men just refer to female friends as vrienden though.
