Weekly Incubator Update: Tracking Progress from January 18th to January 25th
Another course starts in the incubator - the Norwegian course! This team of two has really hit the ground running. They have already crossed the 10% mark. That's awesome!
The French for Portuguese course now tops the Phase 1 chart at 81%. This team too has been rocking all along!
Since June 2014, there has been a talk about the Asian rivalry among the English for Asian language courses to graduate from beta. This started among the Chinese, the Vietnamese, and the Hindi teams. I am happy to report that the Hindi team has won that race.
English for Hindi course has graduated to Phase 3 and the reverse - Hindi for English will start in the next few days. I would like to take a moment to thank all involved. We will soon post another update on our page, which will get included here next week.
Graduated from Beta:
While the English for Hindi course has graduated from beta on the occasion of the Indian Republic Day - 26th January, 2015, this is not the only course that graduated this week.
Earlier this week, the Dutch and the Swedish (both for English speakers) graduated from the beta phase and into Phase 3! Congratulations to all these teams, to team Duo, and to the learning community for all the hard work in helping these courses reach this milestone.
Note about the delay
At the time of posting last week's update, I had anticipated a delay of an hour in posting this update. However, it has taken me longer. I had a number of other tasks to be completed after coming back from my group's ski trip, which was awesome, btw.
As a result, I have based the numbers as of the Saturday's update on Duoinc to keep the week to week comparison meaningful.

Here's what the contributing teams shared during the last week:

Thanks for the help!
Toate cele bune!
Hello, everybody! My name is Andrew and a few months ago, I became a contributor of the English course for Romanian speakers. As you may know, the English course is complete, however there is still a lot of work to do; this includes looking over user reports, and for this, we want to thank you! These reports are a big help towards achieving a more complete and improved course. I would like to see us progress far with these reports and at the same time, accomplish what many people have been long waiting for: the completion of the other Romanian course- a dream which may come true quicker, especially with the help of a new contributor: Sebastian Molin. If you guys have any questions regarding the courses, don't hesitate to contact us. You can also contact me at email@example.com. All the best!
Attention all the courses in Phase 3. If you post an update, please do make a point to let me know. I do not look for the incubator pages for Phase 3 updates - there are 26 of them, and they rarely would have updates! Someone just happened to bring this to my attention and so I am including it.

Progress Update 2015/01/18 -> 2015/01/25
Nitram here, and it feels so good to be able to write these updates again. :)
So, this week was slow and I turned out to be super busy (you know, real life things...). Basically it seems the only time I can somewhat spare is the weekend which is sad but I hope things will get better soon. (What else could I do?)
We are still working on Chapter 9, the current number of completed words is 1828 (looks awesome, doesn't it?).
There have been a lot of questions about testing. As I said in last week's post, we have a tester. We hope to add more in the future, but it would do nothing good, but chaos if we added further testers at the same time. Please don't feel excluded, instead, take this as a good sign (testing is a late-phase thing, you know).
- PUB (percentage until beta) --> 75% (+2)
- PUC (percentage until completion) --> 27% (+1)
(In case you don't understand what PUB and PUC is, please read our previous updates -- for those reading this in jitengore's post: you can find our previous updates here (scroll down).)
Please bear with us; see you next week!

Beta Week 40: Beta Phase Completed
End of beta phase!
In a few moments, on the occasion of the Indian Republic Day, our course will complete its beta phase. Very soon, in the next few days, the much talked about Hindi for English course will get started.
TL;DR A new course (Norwegian) has started Phase 1 and three courses (Dutch, Swedish for English, & English for Hindi completed their Beta phase (Phase 2))
The next update is expected on Sunday, 1st of February at 4:00 pm UTC.
Previous Update 11-Jan to 18-Jan
It's amazing what team Norwegian has done. I don't think we've seen 10% of real progress in these updates since summer and Norwegian did it in less than a week.
Good to see Romanian gaining pace as well.
I am so glad Romanian is moving so much. It's now at 23%. Also, Norwegian reached 13% too, surpassing the Polish course...
It seems all the teams are working harder now.
You're not even staff and you took the time to put all that together? Take some lingots!
And think, he does this for us every single week. He's an awesome guy. Thanks jitengore!
Congratulations to team Hindi. I can't wait for the Hindi for English speakers course.
Wow, Norwegian with 10%, Romanian making great progress (!), Russian making the steady climb to completion, Ukrainian with +6% moving ever closer to Beta, Hungarian and Esperanto both in the 70s and moving along nicely (I don't know which I'm more excited for), and I still can't get over there being Vietnamese in the Incubator.
This was good a week. Let's have more weeks like this.
I'm watching Russian's climb with interest - I've been attempting to brush mine up to the point where I could actually contribute, which is a lengthy process. But I would be beyond thrilled to get stuck into it in the beta phase if that happens before I feel comfortable in Russian again.
It's good to see there's a friendly competition among Asian courses :)
Here's a short announcement from Team Japanese:
The ENJA team has finally started looking for new contributors to make the course even better! See details here. We are looking forward to your application. どうぞよろしくお願いします :)
Excellent news. I hope that many more courses in phase 2 start getting kicked out of beta :). Anyway, as jitengore has noted, it is quite hard to know when a course has new updates in the incubator. Is there any chance of adding a small notification showing the latest contributor messages for the last week (e.g in json/rss format)?
I'm actually thinking of coding a userscript for this, although it'll be an inefficient loop of all update messages. Anyway, lets hope that the ENJA will be the next to graduate from beta.
Aha, so that's the right API call. I had been looking for it for quite some time!
This is exactly what I needed. I've quickly made a simple script that feeds into a google spreadsheet (see here ) and will always show the last update on the incubator (it picks up new updates every day at midnight). It is still a bit raw though, as I haven't formatted the text properly.
I originally wanted to obtain the data for the wiki using getjson, but apparently Duolingo doesn't allow those requests, so there's no way (unless I use a third party app such as google app scripts).
Now I've got to think of more ways to display incubator data (and sort out a few bugs)...
Thanks for the info!
Thanks for coming up with an RSS feed. Is there any way to create a filtered version so I only get up updates for a particular incubating course?
I would have to create a custom version that does that. Alternatively, depending on your RSS feed reader you can potentially set up filters, and group the feeds based on the course you're interested in.
P.S. I didn't think anyone was using it. I'll take more care when debugging/ introducing new feeds in the future.
Guess Jitengore forgot to mention you guys in the Asian race... I'm also hoping ENJA will graduate from beta soon, so JA-EN can start :)
Although there were other teams such are Japanese, Korean, Indonesian and also Arabic, the active conversation about finishing first really happened between the Chinese, the Vietnamese and the Hindi teams. As you can guess, this race was spurred by another competition of that time (June 2014) which was between the Dutch and the Irish teams.
And yes, personally I have been waiting for the JP<-EN course too because the current one JP<-EN is too hard for me!
Let the wind be with them to graduate next.
Indeed, I didn't crossed basic 2 while trying JP<-EN. I mean like I made around 100 attempts but didn't able to cross it. In case of English <- Spanish a lesson rarely goes above 30-31 attempts. :P
I didn't even get that far: I couldn't understand the Duolingo page anymore ^^
Thanks for another great update, Jitengore! What an excellent week!
- Congrats Team Dutch (de Vijanden!), Team Swedish and Team Hindi on graduating to Phase 3!
- Hei, Team Norwegian! Welcome to the Incubator! It's so great to see you guys making amazing progress already. I cannot wait for your course!
- Team Hungarian: You guys are getting sooooo close! Your course is gonna be brilliant...I am really looking forward to it.
- Team Hindi: OMG OMG OMG! Reverse course in a few days? jaw hits floor This is the best DuoNews I've heard in a long time! I can't wait to see how you guys teach Devanagari :)
As always, many thanks to you for taking the time to do that.
Can't wait for the DE->ES tree! Go team DE/ES!!!
Hmm, you seem awfully certain that the Hindi courses for English speakers will be added within a few days, was this actually confirmed by staff, or just an educated guess?
By the way, it seems you won the asian phase 3 competition, but lost the new Asian Tree competition, team Vietnamese seems to have won that.
Anyway, if Duolingo is really considering adding a hindi tree has it finally figured out a way to teach a foreign script?
I haven't heard any official news but there was unofficial talk that the foreign script bug was fixed. Besides, teaching Hindi isn't that much different from teaching Russian, script wise.
Well, he IS a contributor for the Hindi course. If anyone other than staff would know it'd be him.
True, but there is always the chance of last minute changes and/or miscommunication.
Jitengore, once more I would like to thank you for all your bespoke updates. You're doing an amazing job with building the course and keep track of these weekly updates (HOF included). Your philanthropic manner is much appreciated by a lot of people. You are awesome. Thank you so much!
Jiten, congratulations on graduating!
However, this isn't over yet.<h1>ಠ_ಠ</h1>
These are exciting times in the incubator! I'm so excited that Norwegian was added, and to see that team is making great progress already. That means I'll have to hurry up with Swedish, since I want to have my Swedish tree finished before I start another Scandinavian language.
Also, I'm really looking forward to Russian. I've wanted to brush up my Russian a bit for some time now, so it's good to see that the team is making steady progress as well.
Congratulations to all the teams whose courses entered phase 3 this week. I can't thank you enough for all the hard work and effort you put into these courses that make language learning easy and fun for the rest of us. Thank you!!!
Loving the steady pace Russian has been putting up on the board lately. It's pretty awesome to see that +2 each week and now every week on the chart shows a +2 change!
Very soon, in the next few days, the much talked about Hindi for English course will get started.
Ahh! I can't wait!
Jitengore, thanks for finding the time to continue providing these awesome updates even when real life (ski trips!) gets in the way.
That is great news, I still wonder why the Greek for English course hasn't started yet since the reverse course has graduated quiet some time and the Norwegian course just came out of nowhere.
Holy mother!! Norwegian, Vietnamese AND Hindi?! I can't wait! If only you could learn all languages in a few days... Go Duo!
Thanks so much for putting this up! You are so kind as to give us these WEEKLY. You are truly amazing! I am so excited for the Hindi course and that Romanian is finally moving again. I hope it will reach beta soon!
LINGOTS FOR YOU!
Thanks for the great update! I think you forgot to update german for turkish this week. Can't wait for the hindi course to start!
Also you have amazing dedication! What was it like midnight your time when you posted this update?
Thanks (+lingots), rajuncajun09! Thankfully, I had updated the chart correctly as well as the overall progress number. I have just corrected the table.
Yes, it was around midnight yesterday :)
Congratulations to team Dutch, team Swedish and team Hindi for graduation. Well done everyone. Your efforts are worth admiring. Thanks Jiten for your every duo updates. And also congratulations for your team for winning that race.
Beta, aakhir tum graduate ho hi gaye!!!
(transliteration of a Hindi sentence meaning "Beta finally you have graduated. ")
Congrats to Team Hindi, Team Dutch, and Team Swedish for completing the beta phase!
And congrats to all the other teams for their hard work! ^_^
Jive Hindi to English ;) (Not jive, but "gee-ve'. Completely different)
Whoever are doing the :"_ for Italian Speakers" are really motoring along
Waiting for Esperanto, Romanian and Hungarian. I speak Hungarian, but my girlfriend and my pupils could use the Hungarian course for exercising. I feel that I could advance fast in Esperanto (unlike in German, which is just a weak struggle since like a 100 days, I don't have any motivation to go further), and would like to try to do some basic Romanian as well. It's definitely an interesting language.
