Translation conventions

Hey,

I have been trying to make heads or tails of Spanish for a while now, using duo lingo as my main reference point and have tried to get as much out of the site as I can.

In doing so I have attempted to translate a few of the immersion articles. I am actually pretty poor at Spanish despite living in Peru for over a year now and trying to practice everyday (I don't have a knack for languages). But I have noticed in the discussion that some people seem to get pretty annoyed about the poor translation of articles.

How is this immersion section supposed to work? Is it just get in there and give it a go? Or is it expected that you will know the exact translation of what you are writing and unless you know the answer it is best to write nothing?

Also what are the up votes and down votes for? What is the ultimate goal with them?

Here is a useful post on immersion from Usagiboy7. The up votes and downvotes place you into translation tiers, and your translation tier determines how much xp you earn from translating articles and up voting other people's translations.
