difference between "ich weiß" and "ich kenne"

don't they both mean "know?" or are they for different situations?

"Kennen" is used to express that we are familar with a person or a place. "Wissen" is used to express that you know a fact. You've got knowledge about something.

yup kennen is for people and places wissen is for knowledge.

the context you're most likely to come across kennen is in 'kennenlernen' Ich habe Matt kennengelernt. I met/got to know matt. ich will deutsche Studenten kennenlernen. I want to meet/get to know german students.
