University of Groningen (NL) just announced a free introductory 3-week course for people who want to learn Dutch, starting March 2.

It might be interesting to do alongside the DL course.

I have signed up for this already! I have really concentrated on Italian and have done a fair bit on Swedish in the last couple of weeks. For someone who hated languages at school, I really wish Duolingo had existed when I was forced to do French for O Level!

I love FutureLearn! I noticed it's actually made by the makers of the Dutch coursebook Nederlands in Gang! How awesome!!! :D

I already registered... actually, it was the main reason I started the Dutch tree! And now I seem to be slightly addicted to Dutch. Whoops.

Just signed up. Maybe this will fill in some of the blanks. Although I must say, the resource is really closely tied to the UK. It would be really cool to see them expand to America.

Thanks for sharing! :) One side question: Do we need to be available at a certain time of the day, or since the course is online we can pick our own periods?

I don't know, wondered myself as well. I will try to find it out for you!

You don't have to be on at a certain time. The purpose of FutureLearn and MOOC courses on the web are so that you can do these courses during your free time :) so if you can spare 20 minutes, you can do an exercise or so in one of the course weeks. It says 3hrs a week because it has 3hrs worth of material each week :) the only likely time there'll be a set time, is probably when the course educators have a google hangout for questions (if they have one) but it's not required for you to attend or participate in the hangouts :)

Well, I just talked to one of the leaders. She didn't know DL. :)

The course is during a period of three weeks and aimed for people who intend to visit the Netherlands for work or family. I will not be a low-level course. It has a group, a forum, mails, and you can post some work to be discussed or reviewed.

After tree weeks the active content will be closed. So no reviews, no teachers, no reflections.

JaneEmily had it all right! Well done!

Haha, it helps that I already studied a journalism course on there that was about 6 weeks long so I knew how it worked :D FutureLearn does allow those who have signed up though before the end of the course finish date, to do the work after the course has closed. So for example, you sign up in week 2 of the course, but you don't do any work until a day after the 3rd week is over, you can still access all the exercises as FutureLearn hopes and plans to make sure that their courses are available for people to do in their own time, without having to do it strictly within the time period. But just remember, that you can't sign up after the end of the course to do the exercises. :)

How are people finding the course? It seems to me that the first week was quite challenging if you hadn't had any exposure to Dutch.

I agree. I am now doing Dutch on Duolingo as well. It is good to hear the conversations and Quizlet helps.

Well, it was already said it would not be a low-level course. The aim is set rather high. Learning a language in only three weeks surely will be always be a challenge!

Good luck and have a good time! :)
