just lost my 172 day streak !!!

Devastated to see my, carefully nurtured, streak disappear into thin air, as this has been my biggest incentive to keep carrying on with Duolingo.... sob... Really not sure what happened - perhaps it has something todo with time-zones? But I really thought I had not missed a single day....

Hi R.J. I really do know how you feel, as I have lost my streaks on three occasions now, one of 80 days and the other times 160 and 170. It does knock you down a little and I agree, that the streaks is an incredible motivating factor but I really want to learn French so just got back up and got on with it again. At least you now have another motivator. You now have to reach 173 days! You will reach that on JULY 22nd, so that means, by August 10th, when you started, you will have 365! Wow..Now that will be something to celebrate! Please keep going and good luck.

I lost my streak early on because the day switched at an odd hour. It really upset me and I went off the program for a month. Then I finally got my head together and remembered I am really trying to learn Spanish and not win a game. I had to re-gild many many lessons to get back on track. Try not to get discouraged, the gold/goal is in the learning. You can get that streak back.

Sorry to hear about losing such a long streak! I would be devastated too! It is a good way to keep track of how long I've been working on learning Spanish. I would recommend buying a "Streak Freeze" just in case you should miss a day for some reason. Here's a lingot for you!

Hey R.J. , Keep up the good work. I lost a 270 day streak when my computer crashed and I had to go buy a new one. It's just a number.

RJ... I am so sorry that this happened to you! I am at 171 days, so this has really hit close to home for me.

Keep in mind you've still got that awesome Level 16 flag in Spanish. They can never take that away from you! Not to mention, you've started the reverse tree as well... so think of how easy it will be to level that up. I got to level 10 before I was even halfway done with it. I noticed you've started Immersion... once you get to translation tier 4, you start getting a lot of points per sentence. You can easily get to level 20 or higher by March doing it that way.

Set small goals that you can achieve within days or weeks, and you will find that your motivation is more stable than when you were focused on the streak.

I was wondering why someone would downvote this too? No reason for it. I am sorry about losing your streak RJ, that is a bummer. But it's okay, just get back up and keep going!

Happened to me too. I was on a 75 day streak, and then I accidentally missed it. It really made me lose my motivation, but I just started again after a month long hiatus. I'm already on my 13th day, and if I miss a day again then it's not a big deal. I'm just going to keep going for the sake of learning.

Yep, that's a good attitude Evander. :) I actually never really pay attention to my streak because I just do my DuoLingo every day and I forget to check how many days in a row I have been doing lessons. Like you, I just like learning new languages. If my streak breaks, I will start again! However, I have to admit, I have only been doing lessons for about a month...I can imagine how it might feel to be hundreds of days into DuoLingo and then it goes back to 1. It would probably not feel good, so I do feel for you, RJ and I am sorry that happened. :(

Streak freeze is what keeps me going! Lost two good streaks myself and know the feeling. I have a Duolingo friend/family member and we remind each other, this has really helped. Get your "Streak Freeze" and keep learning.

Yes, that is so painful and demotivating, I'm sorry that happend to you. Mine messed up at 46 days so I always mentally add that to my total. But, I have a trip coming up and I know a won't have internet access for a week. I'm excited for the trip but totally bummed I'll have to start over here.

If you don't finish all the points you're set to aim for every day by midnight, your streak ends. Even if you had more than enough just before midnight last night. If you start just before midnight tonight but don't finish your goal until after midnight, you're back at zero days today and one tomorrow.

I lost a 270-day streak once, it hurt. Now I keep track of my "Duo" days on my profile. Every time I lose a streak, which does happen once in a while, I update my total days with the streak number and keep going with a new streak! I vacation once in a while in a non-internet area so losing the streak is inevitable. Keeping track of total days has been one way to get my thinking straight on my goal: learning Spanish!

I am sorry to hear it! I know how you feel. I made it to 58 days then started a lesson too late one night and lost my streak. I just found that you can buy a "streak freeze" to save you from that. Here's the lingot to help.

That happened to me last year--the streak was just one day under half a year. First and last time I ever trusted to being notified by Duo e-mail. Consequently I rapidly tapered off the XPs per day, and w/in a couple of weeks had stopped visiting the site and didn't come back for months. I wouldn't recommend that! Maybe give yourself a day or two off, think about how great knowing Spanish well will be, and start over on your streak. Please accept a few lingots, to (maybe) help cheer yourself up.

Missy, yes, you can buy a Streak Freeze as insurance of a sort from your Lingot store...if you miss a day, the Streak Freeze will activate and you can keep your streak. Once it "saves" you though, that one time, the Freeze will be gone, so make sure you always have a purchased Freeze. :)

The streaks can be powerful motivating forces.

But ... stating the obvious ... they're only as meaningful as you make them. (That's especially true now because you can pick your own daily goal starting at one XP.)

I think I lost my streak once because I did a lesson on my phone outside my carrier's coverage area. I didn't get home until after midnight, and by the time the results got to Duo's servers, it was too late.

So that was frustrating. But of course the loss of the streak didn't mean I had lost any of the knowledge I had gained from doing the lessons.

The end of the streak also didn't retroactively sap the joy I had received many hundreds of times upon completing a lesson or miraculously - in my mind at least - getting one of those "no way in hell am I going to get this one right" questions right.

Hang in there and you'll put this behind you quickly.

I know how you feel, brother. Besides the useful "streak freeze", Duolingo should add another very necessary option: BACK TO THE PAST (BTTP)... or STREAK RECOVERY. Even if you can only go back one day... BACK TO THE PAST (BTTP) is definitely something that is SUPER NECESSARY. :'( I just lost my over 60 day streak. It is not 172, but still... tears were cried. PS.: BTW, even if BTTP was 100 lingots, I would gladly pay for it... My 60 day streak :'(
