What is the difference between el auto and el coche? What would a listener think if you used one term instead of the other? For instance, where I live, car sounds more natural than auto. And to use automobile sounds awkward or pompous, but is still understood.

I think the difference is merely regional.

In Spain you hear "coche" most of the time. "Automóbil" too, but less in casual conversation and more in the news, or the driving regulations etc.

If somebody says "auto" I will understand him or her, but it will sound "foreign" to me.
