Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

One small step at a time

I have come to the conclusion that one has to really learn a language for many years, preferably as an exchange student overseas. This does not stop me from learning a few travel phrases I might be able to use during a vacation in a country or province where another foreign language are spoken. I didn't learn English overnight. But I continue to work on the language tree and enjoy it anyway. The difference now is that I don't expect the same thing from myself as I did before and appreciate whenever I am able to understand more whether it's a TV program, travel show, or maybe a movie in a foreign language. As for Spanish, one can just watch the Spanish channel.

How do you slow down the movie on a DVD? I know how to change the language in settings n special features and add captions in English. I tried to watch Phantom of the Opera in French and switched back to English because it was so fast.

If you are able to watch the DVD on your computer instead, then VLC player (and most others) will have the option of slowing it down for you. As for physical DVD players, I don't believe all of them have that functionality.

My DVD player is incapable of slowing the movie down; I suspect that most cannot. I do have an A-B Repeat feature where I can set it play one scene or one sentence over and over again. Just the other day I realized that one song on my MP3 Player didn't have the lyrics: "Y yo seco tal vez" but it was actually "Y yo sé que tal vez" It took me only ten years to figure it out. I think you can really learn the language - any language, even if you're not an exchange student. It might take more time and be more difficult figuring it out on your own, but the feeling of getting it when it's fast and understanding it when it isn't is worth it.

This is off on a tangent but I love love love the Phantom of the Opera!!!!

Nighttime...sharpens...heightens each sensation....

Darkness...stirs.... and wakes imagination....

Silently the senses... abandon their defenses......
