Call for Contributors

The EN<-JA team has finally started looking for new contributors to make the course even better! See details here. We are looking forward to your application.

I guess I had not picked this update cleanly last week :)

Although Hideki San had added a reference in the comments, I am repeating it this week for the sake of completeness. Also the repetition would not hurt when one is looking for contributors :)

Quarter Progress Update!

Salut la toți!
I am Sebastian, one of the newest contributor to this course and after the strong work ethic of the team the last couple of weeks, we've decided it was time to do a progress update!
I would like to start out by saying this: I want to raise attention and applaud two of the best Moderators that I know, Fantomitzah and Dan_gloriosul. I don't know if I could ever stay and verify that every sentence written by others, are 100%, and when I see how they strive to verify all the sentences I write are correct, I simply cannot wish for a better team to work with. This course would be NOTHING without the amazing moderators we've got! AndrewMasa is also a new contributor to the course as I am, and after working together for about 2 weeks, we have discovered that we have tons of things in common, but most importantly, we both want YOU to have the opportunity to learn Romanian through the Duolingo educational system. We work as a team, together we strive to give you the best Romanian course out there.
Progress is going great! We are adding new skills, new words, and new sentences every day, and our plan is to keep going at it! We've got passed the first checkpoint, but we have a ton left to do. I wouldn't hold my breath for too long, because the course is still in its early stages, and we want to make sure that everything is explained to you. Romanian grammar is somewhat on the harder scale, and sometimes it even gives natives trouble! But that's not a problem for the Romanian team here on Duolingo. :)
If you have any questions, feel free to contact the team, if you would like to contact me, I'm always available by duo, or by email - Sebastian.c.molin99@gmail.com.

Week 1

Hei!

It has now been a week and we feel that we should give you a small update on what we have done so far. We have had a flying start and we have managed to complete about ten per cent of the tree so far. We expect to keep the pace, but do not trust the computed completion date. – It is far too optimistic.

Norwegian allows you to write in a variety of ways. There are many ways to express oneself without being wrong. To make it easy to learn a language, the course needs to be consistent. We have chosen to follow the norm used by NTB (a press agency). This is a moderate form of Bokmål. We will, however, always accept all valid variations of grammar and words, even weird mixes of moderate and radical Bokmål.

We use the Swedish tree as a template, but it looks like the end result will be a little different. In case anyone is wondering: Nynorsk will not be a part of this course.

Be patient with us! If you have any questions, feel free to ask us in the discussion forums.

New team member wanted

We have received a large number of applications and we are happy to see such a great interest in wanting to contribute! We have decided to add one new member to our team at the moment: We are looking for a native English speaker who can help us ensure accurate and consistent translations, understandable help pages and a sensibly organised language tree.

The member should have a good grasp of Norwegian, probably at a C1 or C2 level. We will consider both existing applications as well as new ones, and we hope to make a decision in about one week.

We will consider adding additional contributors later. – Both moderators that can create course material and "alpha testers" that test what we have created so far.

amuzulo from Team Esperanto wrote 21 hours ago:

No news is good news from us :)

As you may have noticed, there hasn't been any news in quite a while and that's because, there hasn't really been any news. The course keeps progressing, but nothing really newsworthy to report.

Dejo has been doing a great job proofreading every sentence in our course. He's finished that task and has already started writing sentences. We wanted to proofread everything while still working on it to make sure we can publish it even faster when we hit 100% instead of proofreading it all at the end.

We've also been putting a lot of effort into writing detailed grammar and usage notes. You'll be delighted to hear that most of our modules have extensive notes!

In any case, paŝo post paŝo, post longa laboro, we're getting there! :)

Dear friends,

After 54 weeks of continuous weekly updates, we will now take a break. Our course has just graduated from beta on 26-Jan-2015. Henceforth, the updates will be sporadic. We will write an update only when there is something significant to share with you. However, we will continue to address the user reports. The user reports have been very valuable for us to take the course reach the recent milestone. As of now all the incoming reports have been addressed.

We would like to take a moment to acknowledge the contributions from various folks:

1. Team Duo: We are very thankful to the awesome Duo Team that has provided our Hindi team the platform to build a course for English that has benefited over 302,000 Hindi speakers so far. You have taken our requests, feedback, and suggestions and collaborated wonderfully with us to help us reach here. We would like to call out Monica, Chenxi, and Luis for their invaluable help. Also thanks to the incredible Incubator Dev team, the community team, and the entire Team Duo.

2. Ex-teammates: We would like to thank our two teammates who have recently chosen to move on to different things in their lives. Both Ankit and George have been part and parcel of our team for a long time. We wish them success and also would like to remind that our doors are always open if and when they decide to rejoin.

3. Incubator friends: We have enjoyed working with incubator contributors for the several courses. Logging into the incubator has always felt like a home. We have learned a lot from you and you have contributed to our course's success.

4. The Duolingo community: Our course takers have provided us with invaluable feedback. Even now, our user report acceptance rate is about 10%. It would have been highly impossible to refine our course content without your suggested reports.

At the same time, there have been a few reports, more so in the recent few months, with unacceptable use of the nukta (bottom dot). Please do not send us reports with incorrect use of the nuktas such as - ज़ूता (shoe), ज़ैसे (like), क़रना (to do), etc. The correct words are without the nuktas - जूता, जैसे, करना. Please do not waste your time and our time! We will NOT accept such incorrect spellings.

We will leave you with some statistics and the timeline of our enjoyable journey.

  1. Total words taught in our course: 1952
\2. Total words images in our course: 301
\3. Number of weeks in Phase 1: 12
\4. Number of weeks in Phase 2: 40
\5. Number of learners as of January, 2015: Over 300,000
\6. Average report count last 30 days: 2.73 reports per 100 users
\7. Average report count last 20 days: 2.45 reports per 100 users
\8. Number of team members: 5

Best Regards.

So Much (Good) News

Merhabalar! Hey guys!

We have so much good news! Really.

Please join us in inviting gamzebilsen to our team. She is going to help us finish the course and has been great so far. We also have invited two other people to participate in our course development, Derya and Aslan. They are going to help us finish writing Tips and Notes, which is going to be really important for our course since Turkish grammar is a challenge for native English speakers. This is going to help speed everything up as well.

On top of all of this, we have already been testing out TTS for the course. We are struggling to find a satisfactory program, so please be patient in this regard. Get ready. Turkish is coming!

Progress Update 2015/01/25 -> 2015/02/01

Sziasztok,

Not much to tell this week. Progress is made, albeit slowly.

Number of completed words: 1837. Currently working on Chapter 9 (out of 10 chapters).

Percentages:

  • PUB (percentage until beta) --> 76% (+1)
  • PUC (percentage until completion) --> 27% (+0)

(In case you don't understand what PUB and PUC is, please read our previous updates -- for those reading this in jitengore's post: you can find our previous updates here (scroll down).)

That's all for now, see you next week! :)

TL;DR It seems that it was only yesterday that we had 50 courses on Duolingo and now we have 57! More graduations to come in the coming weeks. The French from German course graduated from beta and the German from Portuguese has come to the incubator.

The next update is expected on Sunday, 8th of February at 4:00 pm UTC.

Is there a typo in the progress list, though? It says "Turkish for English - 59% | 60% | 64% | 66% (+0) ^" - that should be (+2), I assume? Or is the course still at 64 %?

Anyway, I can't wait for Norwegian and it's amazing how fast team Norwegian is making progress! :-)

Yes, that was an omission on the % delta. Although, the 2% was already accounted for in the overall progress number of 2.41%. Lingots for you in gratitude!
