Study tip with Google Translate

Every time you miss a word in Duolingo type it into google translate. Not the quick translate but this page

https://translate.google.com/#es/en/paga

Hit the Star in the translation box and you can add the word to your phrase book. I think you have to be logged into google plus for it record in the phrase book. If you then click on the word you can review all the information google translate gives.

I used to try to keep a hand written record of the words I missed but this works better.

buena suerte

Here, try SpanishDict. If you make an account, you can create flashcards, do lessons, et cetera. I haven't done all that; I just made an account so I could get the Spanish Word of the Day email... (which is also great)

But best of all is, there are not one, but three translators, and they're all great. For instance, if I wish to translate "Spanish is a very fun language to learn," I type that in and up pop three translations, along with audio for each:

  • Español es un muy buen lenguaje para aprender (Microsoft Translator)
  • Español es un idioma muy divertido para aprender (SDL)
  • Español es una lengua muy divertida para aprender (PROMT)

Then, from those translations, I can create the most accurate translation.

I've generally found this method to be much better quality than Google Translate ^_^

Is there a way to star words on SpanishDict? I just started using it and I would love to be able to do that.

Not that I know of. As I said, though, I use it a lot, but not with my account (that's only for the email). So, perhaps you can if you have an account. And if you can't, make a suggestion! Stars are super helpful ^_^

And which of those translations did you deem to be the best, JK? ;-)

:P I think I'd actually pick the SDL one. I usually pick the Microsoft Translator one though.

Nice! I do the same with Anki flashcards, which I prefer to Google Translate. I use WordReference.com to view meanings and phonetics and copy both to my flashcards. That's a lot slower than what you do though, which is pretty streamlined and slick.

I do find that Google Translate is often wrong though, or if not exactly wrong at least not precise. I prefer Word Reference because I feel I learn more from it.

Still, both are great resources and compliment DL well.

I use Google Translate every single day, and I've never known of this feature.

Pro tip: use a mic/headset and say everything you want to Google (e.g. Spanish), set languages accordingly.

I find its essential translating, as the robots give you only a few translations that they think are relevant, and is often one which is not there. Its a good idea to look up the alternate meanings which are not always given, otherwise you can misunderstand some crucial words.

Great tip, you can also export your phrase book into a spreadsheet.

That in turn is also a great tip. You can then probably import your spreadsheet (via export to csv) into Anki or other systems.

Great tip. I've also used the translator on Quizlet and added the words I look up to my "sets" which you can use to make quizzes, flashcards, games, etc. I highly recommend it.

This is a way of recording your mistakes so you can review them later. Duolingo actually does this I believe, we just dont have access to it. Mabe they should give us a place to write a error log.

Thanks for this tip! I've used Google translate a lot and never noticed the star! I've added my first word to the phrasebook already. Also, thanks to the people who mentioned Quizlet, I also signed up for an account there!

I prefer WordReference, Google translate allows that, to translate words, but most of the cases in order to make a good and clear statement it is necessary to check out some grammar rules, conjugations, synonyms, et. That is why I prefer WordReference :)
