Found a cool German word

In my German textbook at school I found the word Schlagzeug which is German for drum but literally translates as... hit stuff!

Hope you all enjoy Duolingo as much as I am!

Just FYI, "das Schlagzeug" refers to the drums or a drum set, not just a single drum.

I have wondered if the proper translation for Makerbots would be Zeugzeug (Zeug zum Erzeugen von Zeug).

"Maker" would be "Schöpfer", "Erschaffer" or "Erzeuger". So it would be a "Schöpfungsroboter", "Erschafferroboter" or similar (which all are odd in some way). Typically the English term is used, though.

I see. So a company of Makerbots would be a Makerbotschaft.

More or less. :) But this is misleading, since "Botschaft" would be a message or embassy.

Using "~zeug" to describe tools or things that don't necessarily share some common denominator is rather common. Some more examples:

  • "Werkzeug" - "tools" (literally "work stuff")
  • "Flugzeug" - "airplane"
  • "Fahrzeug" - "vehicle" ("driving stuff")
  • "Feuerzeug" - "lighter" ("fire stuff")
  • "Nähzeug" - "sewing kit" ("sewing stuff")
  • "Spielzeug" - "toys" ("playing stuff")

These can be extended as well:

  • "Düsenflugzeug" - "jet powered airplane"
  • "Wasserfahrzeug" - "water vehicle" (i.e. "ship")
  • "Schienenfahrzeug" - generic name for vehicles driving on rails
  • "Straßenfahrzeug" - generic name for vehicles driving on roads
  • "Luftkissenfahrzeug" - "hovercraft"
  • "Rettungsfahrzeug" - "ambulance" (uncommon)
  • "Elektrowerkzeug" - "electric tools"
