Belgium, that tiny little country filled with chocolate, comic books, fries and beer, that's Duo's next stop on his search for new languages to be added to the incubator!

First a map:

Duo arrived at the airport of Zaventem, and his nearest destination is the bilingual capital, Brussels!

The most interesting things to visit in Brussel/Bruxelles are Manneken Pis/Le Petit Jules, a small but very famous statue, the Atomium, an iconic building representing a iron atom that has been constructed for Expo 58 (and is one of Europe's most bizarre buildings according to CNN), and its beautiful Flower Carpet on the Grand Place/Grote Markt, which Duo has visited last summer, as you can see above.

Duo's next stop was the beautiful Medieval city of Bruges/Brugge!

As you can see, Duo loves to make boat trips, but when is still in Beta, he even doesn't have to wait! The Venice of The North is the ideal place for this!

His third stop was the amazing city of Ghent/Gent/Gand!

Ghent has always been the city of rebels and the city of studying, with its university! Duo is well prepaired, as you can see!

The next place Duo visited was Dinant!

This is Duo's first pure French speaking city, as Bruges and Ghent are Flemish and Brussels bilingual, and it's a good one to start. It is one of Belgium's unknown pearls. It's beautiful view on the Meuse/Maas, it's just... perfect. :)

While in Wallonia, he also visited the Caves of Han!

A beautiful piece of nature, at least in Belgium, I must say :)

Back to Flanders! Duo's last stop was Antwerp/Antwerpen/Anvers.

As it is the city of Diamonds, he bought a souvenir to add to his lingots! An interesting quote of the Antwerpian inhabitants is: "Antwerpen is 't Stad, en de rest is parking!" (For non-Dutch speakers: Antwerp is the City, and the rest is parking lot!) Interesting, isn't it... :)

I hope Duo enjoyed his trip! He just came back now and, he was very suprised to see that two new courses were added! Flemish and Walloon for English speakers!

I hope you liked my post and got a little interested in our unique culture! And also check the other Duo goes to... posts!

That would help your Dutch for sure. Did you know that Belgium is actually a TRIlingual country? German is the official language of Brussels but that doesn't necessarily mean it's used there.

German is the third official language of Belgium, but not of Brussels. There is a small german community in the east of Belgium, bordering Germany, but in Brussels most people speak french, and some may speak Dutch.

I appreciate this post, but I don't think dialects should be Duolingo's priority at the moment. It's not that these are not valuable or viable options, but there are many distinct languages that are highly requested that I think should be added first. French and Dutch are both available right now. I'm not saying it wouldn't be good to see these languages eventually, but I just don't think they should be a priority.

2/13/2015, 10:09:00 PM

Rather late answer, but Flemish isn't just a dialect, it's a variety, but not a dialect. It's the standard language in Flanders. Also, Walloon is a language, not a dialect. It is very close to French though, which is why it's getting less and less popular in Wallonia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walloon_language)

They're not seperate languages, but Walloon is a variation on French and Flemish a variation on Dutch. They differ in that a some words, some pronounciation etc. are different. Like the difference between US. and British English. Or perhaps even like Mexican Spanish vs. Spanish Spanish. Having a seperate course would be helpful if you only want to learn the words common in that region, I suppose, and the tree would be relatively quick to build because you wouldn't have to change many things.

I have always been for a Dialect bonus lesson in these particular languages, not a different course -but the more the merrier. While it seems very clear that Flemish is a very strong and important variant of the same language that Dutch people speak, many linguists consider Walloon as a different language from French. Nowadays most people in Wallonia speak (Belgian) French, so it may be hard to find someone speaking Walloon (so they are indeed very welcome to apply at the incubator!). By the way, I love both Wallonia and Flanders flags!
