Courses Duolingo Offers

Some time ago I made a graph showing what courses Duolingo offers. Well there've been a number of courses added since then so I updated it. I also created groupings for the big language groups or if a subgroup had at least 2 members. It's still a bit messy but hey, it does the job.

Edit: Oh yeah! Green, orange and red arrows are courses in phases 3, 2 and 1 respectively.

Edit2: Please don't give me lingots! I already have 1,070 of the suckers and nothing to really use them on.

NOOoooo!!!

IKR! On another post someone opined that if a native south american language were added it would be from Spanish rather than English. I rather hope that will be case. I think it would be good to remind anglophones we won't always be the first to be catered to. :P

Haha - are you over-lingoted?

I have seen a number of posts complaining about "but we don't have such and such a language yet" siiiiiigh and I mean srsly. We are the freaking epicentre of all the courses!

I imagine it depends largely on the availability of people who are suitably billingual, but yeah, it would make a good deal of sense for things like Quechua and the like to be taught from Spanish, rather than from English.

It is rather exciting to see something like Yiddish added to the incubator, it is almost like it's opening up the possibility of less obvious choices in languages to come up, you know?

I will be throwing a small party when Hebrew for English speakers is officially added, though :D

Random: I wonder if one day there will be a Quehua for Hebrew speakers course? Sindarin for Yiddish speakers? Maybe when Duolingo rises up to take over the world :-o ;-D

ETA: I just saw your edit2 - that IS a lot of Lingots :-o I thought having nearly 200 was silly! soooorrrrreeee. Feel free to return or regift LOL

Just a tad, enjoy your lingots. :P

The pairs I've imagined someday seeing are Māori for Cherokee, Quechua for Nigerian, Mongolian for Basque... someday. sighs wistfully

Oh, yes, I would love them to add a Quechua from Spanish course! And a Quechua from English course! And from German! And all this reversed from Quechua as well! :D This is like a little personal utopia but I would love to see that happen!!!

In all fairness, Duolingo is an American company, so it started with courses from English. I also think a large percentage of the users are American.

EDIT: I looked it up, and about 43% of Duolingo users were American as of December, 2014.

Oh, definitely! I just find some of the whine why don't we have X Y and Z course whine posts a little annoying sometimes, given how much provision there is for English speakers. And I speak as a native English speaker! With all the resources available in English, we have sooooo much choice, so "I can't learn language X because Duolingo doesn't offer it yet" gets a serious sideeye from me <_< when there are languages where DL offers one course, or none.
