More should be done with the Lingot!

Dear Duolingo, It is strangely motivating to be awarded little virtual diamonds. I am forced to question my mental maturity when I find myself giddy with excitement after acquiring yet another unit of this essentially worthless currency. My primitive hoarding instincts cause me to relish my stockpile of Lingots as a squirrel does his nuts. It is only a psychological incentive; and yet, it works so well. I only wish one could do more with one's Lingots. There is only so much to buy in the store and Lingots start to accumulate rather quickly. If someone were to buy everything there is to buy, the Lingot would experience extreme devaluation and thus the incentive would no longer be as effective. (Even a squirrel would eventually lose interest if he could no longer eat his nuts.) GIVE US MORE THINGS TO BUY!

Sincerely, Espanalexander

Use them to hire a therapist to talk about you lingot hoarding problems? If you find one, please let me know, as I could use one too. :) You are completely right, and not the first to mention, the lack of lingot purchases. I try to give miena way at a steady rate, but only to good deserving comments. COnsider finding someone who really just seems super helpful on the forums, and do what I call a...are you ready for this?...LINGOT NUKE!!! SHower them down with dozens of shiny (yet worthless) pieces of virtual money. Now, you no longer have to worry about the lingots, and someone else does. Hope I helped in a slightly sarcastic way. By the way..please don't give me lingots. My doctor says i can't handle anymore without my blood sugar and stress lever skyrocketing. Thanks!

Of course! See, this is where your extensive experience and wisdom in the arts of Lingot warfare truly shine. I appreciate your advice, sarcasm and all. It never occurred to me the Lingot’s most profound virtue: the ability to enable you with the power to be generous, or irritating. Your comment is of the caliber and with to be awarded with a flurry of Lingots; however, because of your doctor’s comment (and partly because of my infatuation with my jewels) I will refrain from giving you a Lingot.

You bet five Lingots that you will be on Duolingo for seven days straight (I don't remember if you have to reach goal, too) and if you win you get 10 Lingots. P.S. I have my daily goal set to one (1). If you miss a day, you lose your five.

I have now purchased and earned two of those challenges. Those are fun! Haven't done any of the quizzes yet. Too afraid!!

I have this theory that duolingo is waiting for all the long-time users to get fed up with having so many lingots that they end up giving them to newer users. Only when this happens duolingo will unleash a plethora of great, new things to buy in the virtual store. Nice post BTW... also i'm not sure if i used the word ''plethora'' correctly.

Oh my gosh. I thought I was the only one who thought this way. Then I feel ashamed for having so many Lingots, and I send a bunch to a friend who is good about giving them away to worthy comments. Andrew Carnegie said that people who die with a lot of money should be ashamed because they should be giving it away to worthy causes while they live. Thus the cause of my Lingot shame.

I have translated it for those people (Spanish speaker) that do not understand the most part of the text and do not have to go to use a translator and for I practice more my English, more than a translation is a interpretation similar to the original text.

Bitcoin is a form of digital currency. You can buy them on exchanges. Right now one BTC is going for $234, but it varies. LTC and DOGE are going for a lot less (the abbreviations above are those for Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Dogecoin. There are probably hundreds of cryptocurrencies out there right now, but they're not all worth much.

To explain it as simply as I can, there are a bunch of computers around the world keeping track of these currencies and what address has what amount attached to it. So I can send you .01 BTC (about $2.34 at the moment) by going to something called a "wallet" (which is a collection of addresses with values attached to them) and telling it what address I want to send it to. A message will be sent to all the computers around the world running that currency's software, and all the computers will update that my address sent some money to your address. Since everybody knows where the money went to, there's no cheating.

You can access your wallet (and other people can't steal from you) because only you (or your computer) knows your 52 digit private key. You can always back this key up on paper and store it in a safe just in case your computer crashes, but you don't want to let anybody else have this key. If they do, they can take your money.

For lingots to be worth more, there needs to be a way to reduce the number of lingots in circulation now. Not studying for a day ought to cost a lingot. As it is the number of lingots is always increasing. This is like a company issuing more shares and diluting its stock every day. No rich benefactor is going to buy lingots if there are more being issued every day. Maybe, after a certain period stop issuing lingots, they become preferred stock. Then start issuing common shares, ergots. And it takes 1000 ergots to buy one lingot.

Idea #2: Work deals with other web companies. Go to Poker.net and I'm sure they will make a deal where we could trade lingots for play poker chips. Neither have money value. 1 lingot would be worth at least 10 play poker chips. You can play in different languages on Poker.net.

The only thing I have bought is the formal attire for my duo owl, two progress tests, and some of the extra lessons on flirting and idioms. Oh, and one Christmas lesson. I kind of wish they had more things as I'm not too interested in betting, although if it's a good way to preserve a streak or double my lingots, I may try it. BTW, I purchased a timed practice, and it says equipped, but I see no difference. What does that mean exactly? Thank you.

https://www.duolingo.com/ChromeQ

It's equipped and you should see it when you strengthen a lesson, it doesn't appear for the modules as far as I know. Click a strengthen on the right of a lesson and then it will ask you if you want timed or non-timed modes.

How do you buy your owl clothes? I would be interested in that.

You get clothes from downloading the duo-lingo app on a Mobil devise! Unfortunately they don't do anything, too anything.

For some reason, this discussion reminds me of a This American Life show: The Invention of Money http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/423/the-invention-of-money

This is true! We should be able to buy more things and earn more Lingots after completing a lesson. I am doing the Spanish tree currently!
