Am I immersing myself into the language the right way?

So, today I got a Spanish/English dictionary, and the first Harry Potter book in Spanish, I plan to annotate (With a highlighter, and pen) as I read and learn new words. Am I going about this the right way? Or should I hold off until I know more vocabulary?

If you are a beginner, Harry Potter might be a bit of an exercise in frustration, unless you know the English version very well. I started with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was really fun.

Hi. Try music. You may find in the lyrics a true "treasure" of vocabulary, grammar, syntax and everyday code of communication and phenomena. I can't guarantee it works for eveybody. Just an idea though.

There is no wrong way, but I think Harry has a HUGE number of odd words. I started with a Goosebumps book -- I got an English copy and a Spanish copy at Barnes & Noble -- and was a good experience to plow through that. I' suggest a grammar/text book in addition to the dictionary, too.

I read the entire Harry Potter series in Spanish after two years of classroom learning. If you know the series very well in English, you will have no problems. Reading is the best way to improve your vocabulary, and you'll really start to sense what "sounds right" after spending a lot of time reading in Spanish.

I would hold off until you can at least know what each verb tense does, which really doesn't take a lot of time, and use the charts in your dictionary (also, your dictionary should be a normal sized one and not a pocket dictionary). Harry Potter will take some time if you are just starting to learn Spanish like others said, and I would write new words on note cards or use a program like Anki as well as highlight them. I would also look out for the obscure words or the words Rowling created (which translators often create new, foreign words for) because there's no need to learn those, and a list like this might help: http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Harry_Potter_in_translation_series .

do you have the same Harry Potter in English? otherwise I am pretty sure you will get frustrated pretty easily. But I think it's a great plan, I should get a Spanish book too, but I will probably with a children's book :D

Try to blend your studying with what you are interested in life in general. As previously suggested by editgkduo music is a fantastic immersion tool to consolidate your learning with.Have a look on youtube and then use one of the countless lyrics sites to research the songs lyrics. I think studying a book such as Harry Potter may be focusing too much in one specific area at such an early stage .Short ,diverse and interesting articles may be of more use . Try http://zachary-jones.com/zambombazo/ for a good mix of articles from a variety of places and also a key (under GĂ©neros) to all of the Spanish language musical styles. Good luck !!
