German indications of historical dates

I've got a short question here: when a German says, for example "Im 5. Jahrhundert", does s/he mean the fifth or sixth century? I'm wondering because I suspect that it might mean "all the years in the century that starts with 5" instead of literally meaning the fifth century.

Jahrhundert means century, so 5. Jahrhundert is all the 400s (we're currently in the 21. Jahrhundert, all the 2000s).

Het is hetzelfde als in het Nederlands: im 5. Jahrhundert = in de vijfde eeuw
