Moderators, important updates!
I can't sticky this here, so if everyone would help out with an up vote that would be appreciated. ^_^
These updates for everyone with forum moderator capabilities.
1. We have a Facebook group! (21 members and rising!)
2. On FB we are discussing the new survey that we received from Kristine via email. (don't have to be member on fb to fill out survey.)
Our Duolingo Forum Moderator group on Facebook!
This group is dedicated to helping Duolingo forum moderators coordinate their efforts to keep the forums in the best condition possible, pair new moderators with seasoned mentors, and coordinate our voices to increase our priority with Duolingo. So if you know a forum moderator, send them an invite. Let's strive for excellence and continuing improvement. ^_^
Current topics in the group include: The survey we received from staff and the new system for moderator consoles.
Because I've selected max privacy, you'll need an invite. To get one, network with folks in the Incubator to get your email to Arnauti, Frankyska, Trang, or AlexinIreland. All of these folks can pass it along to me for an invite. (And, still learning how groups work on FB. It's possible that after joining you can help invite other moderators on your own.)
On Facebook, for me at least (I'm using Win7/Chrome if it matters), when people post in a language other than my own of Facebook, I'm offered a translation option, so I think we can somewhat bridge language barriers. )
Every forum moderator should have received a survey via email from Kristine. If you haven't, make sure you get in contact with Kristine. Please, please, please engage this conversation on facebook and soon.
The deadline for the survey is Feb 20th!
BE SURE TO READ THE EMAIL because it will also affect which forums you can moderate.
- If you are a course moderator and feel that your main forum would benefit from this post, please feel free to make a copy in whatever language best suits your forum.
Thank you everyone!
Hey usagi, I'm forum moderator to the EN<->DE courses - and I've never used Facebook before. I guess that I'll really miss something if I don't get a Facebook account, right? I never wanted to be part of Facebook... Is there a possibility to create a fake alias so that you guys still know who I am?
multiLinguAlex, yes! You are welcome to create a fake alias, several others have. My own fb is very Duolingo centric. ;)
However, it will really really really help if you use your Duolingo handle as your name or nickname. Give folks a way to recognize you in that forum so we know who we are coordinating with. :)
PS I am also still learning how to use FB. (((empathy for the learning curve)))
PSSST: Don't tell anyone but I would love to be a fly on the wall for this. I wouldn't post, I would just listen. Pleeeeeeease let me in the group???
If you ever become a moderator, I'll letcha in the group. Until then though, we are a fly free zone. :(
Well, as regards to (the former) note 3, someone nominated me for moderator in a comment to me a while back (I've forgotten who it was) and I thanked them but told them I wasn't actually looking for an unpaid job at the time. I just wanted to go on record as having reversed that decision, in case anyone happens to wonder. =D
And I agree that bullying the bullies is also unacceptable. You're a great inspiration to me with your continual kindness to mischievous posters.
No, I think note one. I wasn't writing it at you though. Just remembered that I'd been meaning to add it but had forgotten. We've begun having a bit of a problem with people who want to be moderators acting like, well, moderators might act in places other than Duolingo. So, they get a bit pushy and bully the bullies or make newer users feel cornered for doing something wrong. But, on Duolingo heckling or any behavior that makes people not feel welcome etc. tends to move people further away from consideration.
EDIT: I just edited the wiki entry further and now the note is number 3 since it became so long. :)
Hi, I'm forum moderator for Kor->Eng course, how should I contact the people above to be part of the group?
To get one, network with folks in the Incubator to get your email to Arnauti, Frankyska, Trang, or AlexinIreland. All of these folks can pass it along to me for an invite.
Just go to one of the moderators' stream, press the "f" button and it brings you to his/her facebook page.
Who exactly does this include? Anyone who has a moderator badge in at least one forum?
I am a course mod but also a forum mod of my course; I haven't received any surveys..
Hi Selcen! Do you have Kristine's email address? If not, you can get it from the Incubator from the same people I mentioned in the main post who could contact me. :)
Hello Usagi! Although I'm no moderator, I'd like to comment on your platform choice. It makes sense to use Facebook, seeing as it's very popular and widely used, but, like MultiLinguAlex hinted, it's unfortunately also one of the worse services out there!
Facebook is infamous for it's awful treatment of it's useds (users) and privacy violation. That includes tracking of browsing patterns, chat history, any text you type anywhere into Facebook, photos, censorship and most likely other things. While it's sometimes hard and inconvenient, we should try to move away from Facebook and reduce the bad impact it has on the whole society as a result.
I'm not sure what exactly you need from your platform, but there are some alternatives you might want to look into. For chat and communication, you can use IRC or XMPP. For social networking, you can give diaspora* a try. For decision making, check out Loomio. For collaborative text editing, you can use EtherPad.
I understand that this may be viewed as irrelevant, seeing as the community here is centered around languages, but I firmly believe that free/libre software that treats people well and doesn't use them is very important, every computer user should know about it and we should try to use it whenever it's easily doable for us. Therefore, please see if any of the alternatives I listed above are feasible.
Best regards ~ Tirifto (born as a comment, died as a letter)
Thank you for your input tirifto! I am not a very tech savvy person. I joined facebook not too terribly long ago myself and have been slowly getting familiar with it. As many people are already familiar with it and members there, I felt it was the option most likely to succeed. Another moderator, Wataya, already set up an IRC chat for us, but, it didn't thrive with our test group. It is my hope that the need for the FB group will be temporary. One thing we're gathering to try to get is an official forum and chat system for moderators on Duolingo. I will keep advocating for it along with other moderators, so we can include everyone as soon as possible. :)
PS I like how you signed off. I'm famous for writing email novels myself. ^_^;
WELLLLLLLL, true. It's not like you're having coughpartiescough...wait...I didn't say anything, did I? :P
No, jk. :D
Also I left something on your message wall that is unrelated @Usagiboy7.
I am having a bday party in San Francisco end of July and Duolingo peeps (mod and non-mod) are invited. Marssy will be bringing yummy food. But that's off topic so if you want to know more you'll have to message me via Activity.
Hi Connor! That's correct. Forum moderators don't have a discussion forum or chat system of our own yet, so, we've been trying to do stuff by email. But, that's had limited success. So, hopefully a facebook group will work a little bit better for keeping everyone updated and coordinating. :)
Hey usagi! So about that app...what if I get accepted the day after the survey Kristine sent and I wanted to do it?
I'm pretty sure Kristine already sent them. You would probably get one if you get accepted.
I'm so sorry kitten, I would if I could but I can't. (I hope you'll forgive me. I'll go so far as to bribe you with cheese cake if I gotta ;) )
Hi all (forum mods), I wanted to make sure you knew that you don't have to join the Facebook group in order to fill out the survey. But, there is only one day left so please contact Kristine as soon as possible if you haven't yet received it. :)
For those in the FB group, Kristine just posted the link to the survey, no email necessary. For those who aren't in the group, if you haven't gotten it yet, message Kristine. Deadline is tomorrow. :)
