I've been watching Extra en Español, (which is great by the way) and they keep saying vale. I tried looking up the word and varies verbs I thought it might be conjugated from, but I don't understand what they mean by it. This show takes place in Spain, so it might be different from Latin America.

valer - to be worth
no vale nada - it is not worth anything
valer la pena - to be worthwhile
más vale tarde que nunca - better late than never

(I'm not saying it is this, just that's what I find quickest from looking up vale.)

They don't use it in a sentence, just by itself. Like they're saying ok or something simple like that. Doesn't seem to be a straight translation.

Previously I had mostly been exposed to Latin American Spanish. This is the first I've heard it used.

Me too, but my current teacher is from Spain and we're learning a slew of Spain-Spanish.

People in Madrid and Valencia seem to say it a lot. I'm traveling here now and it's all over! Glad I now know what it is...

Vale is the generally-used word for okay in much of Spain, although it can often be a conjugation of the verb valer.
