I have a small box of Dutch books, and if you're interested, and you're in the USA...

03/05/2015 update: All the packages were sent today. Quite a few of the books sent have English translations available at your local library or your local bookstore.

02/21/2015 UPDATE: Have to put this offer on hold for now, all books promised. If you sent me an e-mail, you should have a reply by now. There probably will be more available in the future, but not now.

All in Dutch. First come first served, a few Baantjer mysteries, De Hobbit, The Caine Mutiny, etc. I'd love to open this up to the many Duolingo Dutch folks elsewhere, but I can't afford the postage for that. I mentioned the fact I do this occasionally in another post about Dutch literature, and nobody caught the hint. So a small box, in some cases a single book, I pay the postage, you just have to drop me a message if you would actually read them. (I read a lot of Dutch books and my wife suggested I do this with the extras). (P.S. I'm in the mountains and snowed in at the moment so it won't get there right away).

I've been trying to finish my spanish tree so I can get started with dutch -- the Lord of the Rings would be awesome to get started!

Oops... I've corrected myself above. It's De Hobbit, not Lord of the Rings. Also, I wouldn't recommend these for beginners... I might be able to find you something, though.

Haha, I did consider the difficulty.. if someone comes around more skilled with dutch and wants it, that's fine with me. If you did have something, that would be great, but only if it's no trouble.

I have books left. Can we message here on Duolingo? I thought we could at one time. I need an address to send these books. It's okay for it be your uncle, parents, or school's address, just somewhere the books will get to you. I will send you 2 books, De Hobbit and one other. I sent another message to you via the the "stream" method.

I love your enthusiasm, but you're only at level 1. I'll save you a Dutch mystery book and send it to you when you reach level 6, how's that?

That's great! thanks, I'll try to quickly reach that level 6!

Are any of the mysteries slightly "simple"? I'm trying my best and want to get better, but don't want to be too overwhelmed. (Or, can you point me to where I can find Dutch books? I'm in NJ) Thank you so much for offering - this is too kind!

I will send you one mystery, and something to read with pictures. See directions in edited original post above. Here's another thread that talks about where to find Dutch books... https://www.duolingo.com/comment/6307874

Important message to everyone receiving some books (they are all in the mail): Don't waste them. If you don't want your books, contact one of the other people you see here, or me, or sell them on E-Bay, I don't care. Just don't waste them. Dutch books are not easy to get in the USA.

My question is where are you buying these at? I've failed to find anything other than children's books online.

https://www.duolingo.com/comment/6307874 Ebay, abebooks.... see discussion above.

https://www.duolingo.com/constablecuffe

Thanks! I did. I'm finding Abebooks to be more helpful. I do have one last question. Would you be able to recommend any Dutch poets, or specific authors? Genre doesn't matter too much because I'm hit and miss with everything. I thought poetry might be nice since they're shorter and trying to translate wouldn't make me lose interest in the story overall.

Some Dutch authors are a lot easier to read than others. I like Janwillem van de Wetering, who writes mysteries, some short stories. Baantjer is easy to read, also you can find the book in English so look from one to the other when you get stuck. I also read stuff in Dutch that was written in other languages first. Don't know any thing about Dutch poetry. You could get a collection of short stories and you're bound to get something there you'd like. If you're on Facebook, check out the Duolingo Dutch Learners group, ask there too. Graphic novels are good for learning. Just do yourself a favor, get something you want to read, something you'd read in your native language.
