# Numbers in German

Numbers in German are different all the way to 12

0 = null 1 = eins 2 = zwei 3 = drei 4 = vier 5 = fünf 6 = sechs 7 = sieben 8 = acht 9 = neun 10 = zehn 11 = elf 12 = zwölf

From 13 to 19 they follow the pattern that combines the unity with the word "zehn" (10) :

13 = dreizehn 14 = vierzehn 15 = fünfzehn 16 = sechzehn 17 = siebzehn 18 = achtzehn 19 = neunzehn

In the case of the numbers 16 and 17 they present a irregularity. In 16, the 6 (sechs) losses the 's', in the number 17, the 7 losses the 'en'

Forward 20 all tens follow the same pattern, that consist of changing the unity with the particle 'zig'

**here are some exceptions too

20 = zwanzig ** it isn't zweizig; it is zwanzig

30 = dreißig ** the ending isn't 'zig' but ßig.

40 = vierzig

50 = fünfzig

60 = sechzig

70 = siebzig

80 = achtzig

90 = neunzig

The middle numbers: First you name the unity, then the ten linked by the conjunction "und". For example:

21-29

einundzwanzig***

zweiundzwanzig

dreiundzwanzig

vierundzwanzig

fünfundzwanzig

sechsundzwanzig

siebenundzwanzig

achtundzwanzig

neunundzwanzig

31-35

einunddreißig***

zweiunddreißig

dreiunddreißig

vierunddreißig

fünfunddreißig

• **eins losses the "s"

From here is:

100 = hundert | 200 = zweihundert | 300 = dreihundert | 400 = vierhundert | 500 = fünfhundert | 600 = sechshundert | 700 = siebenhundert

1000 = tausend 2000 = zweitausend 3000 = dreitausend

examples:

725: siebenhundertfünfundzwanzig 1376: tausenddreihundertsechsundsiebzig 5861: fünftausendachthunderteinundsechzig

sorry for the bad englisch :p

Careful of the German Billion if you are a native English speaker. (The modern English billion changed.)

One billion (English) = 1,000,000,000 = Eine Milliarde (Deutsch)

One thousand billion (English) = 1,000,000,000,000 = Eine Billion (Deutsch)

Thank you for this. It will help a lot when I reach this lesson.

Thanks. I can't believe German will leave no space for the word representation of their numbers 0_o

We are not used to write them as words and writing without spaces saves space. ;)

In German, what is one thing is also one word. Making it several words would make it different numbers.

'siebenhundertsiebenundsiebzigtausendsiebenhundertsiebenundsiebzig (777,777) - Just saying! xD

February 20, 2015

You wrote 777 777=777.777

777,777 would be "siebenhundertsiebenundsiebzig Komma sieben sieben sieben".

February 22, 2015

Oh thanks, you are right. Thousand is divided by 'dot' and 'Komma' is used for cents!
