Translation:Mi madre es de allí.
From my understanding, you cant change where you are from, so it is a fixed placement. I will always be from (born and/or raised) in Canada and that will never change so 'es' is appropriate.
It is understandable using "ahí" instead "allí". But there is a little difference, even we (spanish native speakers) ignore it.
- When you say "ahí" you mean a place which is nearer than when you say "allí"
But besides that, you answer is correct.
