la pane l'acqua
Why is l'pane wrong but l'acqua is correct? is this a site error as on the site i have to use la pane, could someone explain this to me please thanks :)
l' only comes before a vowel... so that's why l'acqua is correct and l'pane is not :)
because pane starts with a consonant - a e i o u are vowels and you cannot have " a apple " in English - we would say an apple for ease of pronunciation. Same in Italian hence il pane and l'aqua. Hope this helps
Sometimes Y can be considered a vowel does this apply in the italian language or is it strictly AEIOU
i don't think there are any words in Italian that start with Y. If there are, I've never seen them
in the italian alphabet x,y,k,j aren't considered "real letter" the only words that you'll find with them in it are english words that are used in italian, also there aren't any words that start with "h"
What about hotel, and ha and hai and hanno?
Admittedly, most words starting with H are foreign but some are genuine Italian words.
here are the (alfabeto italiano) italien alphabet :
A; B;C; D; E; F; G; H; I; L; M; N; O; P; Q; R; S; T; U; V; Z and
(il lettere straniere) the foreign letters :
J; K; W; X; Y
@ psionpete you are right with your comment, but I thing the italien word for hotel is albergo...... but it is truth that the italians have adopted many words from the english language like" "hobby", "Email", " etc. ..... sometimes it sounds funny but i like the way how they pronounce it :)
Y only exists as a sign but is always treated as an I.
So words in yo- are treated like words in io-
e.g. lo iodio = iodium - similarly lo yogurt = yogurt, lo yeti = the yeti.
and words in y-, provided they exist (I couldn't think up any one y-word), would be treated like ones in i-
if you could add an article to Yggdrasil (the tree of life in northern mythology) it would be l'Yggdrasil, gli Yggdrasil
