Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

https://www.duolingo.com/PeregrinaDelAmor

I have grown a golden Spanish tree!

I am feeling almost absurdly pleased with myself at the moment as my Spanish tree is now in full blossom! I discovered Duolingo in August last year so it has taken me six months to nurture my tree. I averaged about five lessons per day (with four being review and one new) although there were several times when the demands of my job prevented me from doing any practice at all. I had no prior knowledge of Spanish before starting on Duolingo. I supplemented my learning along the way by doing the Salamanca A2 online course through the University of Salamanca, using the BBC Spanish language website and associated links, watching the news on RTVE online and speaking with my Spanish friend.

I am determined that my golden tree will not be an end in itself but rather will be a step on the way to greater fluency in Spanish. Hence, in addition to keeping my tree shiny gold, I shall continue working on the reverse tree. I plan to continue using the resources mentioned above and shall also make the time read more Spanish books, watch more Spanish television and films and listen to Spanish music!

Thank you to everyone at Duolingo for providing such a wonderful means of learning for free!

Congrats! You will find the reverse tree far more instructive (grammar wise) than the regular tree.

Thank you! That is good to know! I must say that I was a bit lost in the last third of the tree as the handy hints seemed to have evaporated. I am looking forward to having more assistance!

¡Enhorabuena!

How is the Salamanca A2 course? Would it still be useful to someone who has graduated to B1/B2 territory? I've had it bookmarked for months and almost joined the course last time it started. I don't know when the next one begins but I may still give it a shot.

Is this something you can follow at your own pace or do you have to do it on a fixed schedule? I see that there are videos at Youtube so I am wondering why it is necessary to register. Perhaps that may be for those who may eventually wish to get accredited? I thank you also for providing that information.

I have registered. It starts 4th May 23:00 CET and ends 16th June 21:59 CET.

This is what they say. Quote "Distributed in 6 modules, the course is more oriented towards communication and social interaction than to mastering the formal resources of Spanish: its ultimate aim is to provide its followers with the means to solve basic tasks or problems typical of daily life, using Spanish to do so.

The course is organized around fundamental functional nuclei (see below), and provides audio-visual material for the presentation of the contents and its contextualization. Learners will also have other materials available through different media (conventional material in PDF, Power Point presentations, forums, wikis, etc.). The course has been designed to stimulate autonomy and cooperative learning." Syllabus A continuación se muestran los módulos y actividades que forman el curso. Se indican fechas y hora de inicio y fin de cada módulo, así como fechas de finalización del plazo para realizar las tareas obligatorias. En el caso de actividades p2p se deben tener presentes dos grandes momentos: fecha máxima para realizar la entrega de la tarea y fecha máxima para realizar la valoración a compañeros.

Thank-you adder3, I have registered and I just hope that I will be able to keep to their schedule. I noted their alert with regard to time and that it is according to Western Europe. When I registered I wasn't aware of the start date and perhaps I will be travelling around that time. There is always the worry that the Internet connection at any given Motel or Hotel will not be in service. Ah, well. I will find out when the time comes.

https://www.duolingo.com/PeregrinaDelAmor

Jellylava, there is a date by which you have to complete the course so if you would like to have either of the certificates you need to finish by the due date. Each week, a new module becomes available and the idea is that the learner works through the learning materials for each module during the week. The videos that are on Youtube are the main stories that provide the theme for the module but there are other shorter videos that are not available on Youtube that focus on certain language points. Within the time frame of the course, you can work at your own pace. It is ideal to do a little each day but I went through a few manic weeks at work and had to do three modules at one time. The registration requirement seems to be purely an administrative matter and of course it also facilitates the issue of the certificates if you do complete all modules. There is no penalty if you do not complete them, though.

Thank you, EnigmaticTiger!

I think perhaps you might not find the Salamanca A2 course enough of a challenge given that you are at the B1/B2 level. However, the course itself is completely free and there would be no penalty if you were to try it out and then decide later that it was not what you are looking for. When I did it, I had completed less than half of my tree, so it was a stretch for me. I stuck with it because I liked the fact that the course teaches very practical language: structures that would be useful in a Spanish-speaking country, rather than alarming declarations such as, "I am going to eliminate you". I do not mean to appear to be attacking Duolingo here; I understand that it is geared toward a different purpose, it is only that I do not plan to eliminate anyone on my next trip to Spain! Maybe you could register and try it out?

Congratulations! Don't forget that review is so important as well. I have also achieved my golden tree but I am always surprised by how much I have forgotten when I go back for review (the segments will show up with missing strength bars to show what you should have another look at.) The immersion is also a wonderful resource and I think you will enjoy all the topics one can learn about As well, what you have already learned will be of benefit to those just getting going when you can assist with comments if you feel you should make a correction to their translations. I plan to eventually do the reverse tree but for now, I know I must review, review, review. :-)

Hi, What does "reverse tree" mean ?

https://www.duolingo.com/Daniel-in-BC

I had the same question. After reading around, I believe it means that if you are learning Spanish from English, the reverse tree would be learning English from Spanish. (You can switch back and forth without losing any of your progress, etc.)

Thank you, jellylava, and thank you for the reminder to review! I know just what you mean about forgetting earlier segments (blossoms?) of the tree! There have been several times when a skill has lost its sheen and I have found, to my chagrin, that the content was not so firmly planted (pardon the pun!) in my brain as I had hoped! If only learning a language were like learning to ride a bicycle in that once you have learned, you will always know! Regular review is absolutely essential. I shall also delve into immersion now I have done the tree.

congrats! I also decide to learn Spanish. Is it hard to learn?

https://www.duolingo.com/PeregrinaDelAmor

Thank you, ferghana! I think your question is hard to answer because how difficult it is for someone to learn a language depends on many factors. For instance, if you know French, you might find Spanish quite easy to learn because there are similarities between the two languages. There is also the question of your natural ability to learn languages and some people just find it easier than others. There are several other things that can affect your ability to acquire a language but a major factor is certainly the effort that you put in. If you make enough effort and make the time to learn, you are sure to succeed! Learning Spanish on Duolingo is a lot of fun! Good luck!

Wow flyingazul, that seems like a lot to work toward. Are you doing it all at the same time or one after the other? I started the French at the same time I was working through the Spanish tree and found that it was merely a distraction and stalling progress in both so have I put the French on hold for now. I do speak French but I wanted to refine the grammar. I have also found in the past that studying Italian would obliterate my Spanish and vice versa. I would love to have a good command of both but for now I am just focusing on mastering Spanish and getting to the point where I can comfortably carry own a conversation with a native speaker without getting flustered and tongue tied. :-)

I realized another good reason for doing the various reviews a day or two ago. Sometimes you come across terms or words which you have not previously encountered in the lessons. They are randomly assigned and so they may have 20 or 25 to select from and we are only presented with 17 to 22 of them (I don't know exactly, just using these numbers as examples). We may miss 3 to 5 with any lesson and even when we are testing out we may not encounter them the first time we do it.
