would replacing "al" with "por" makes this "he studies 10 hours per day" ? if not then how would you say that? I get that they are essentially the same but I like to know alternate acceptable versions too. :D

"A" in English and Spanish can mean "per" so the duolingo sentence can already be translated as "per day". You could use por here though. I'm not 100% if you need "por el día" or just "por día".

I thought "per" was one of the uses of "por" but wasn't sure exactly how it would work here and if "el dia" is required or just "por dia" and if both are reasonable than what is the difference?!
