Are there any plans to create a Suomi (Finnish) language course?
Hello! I am rather new to the Duolingo community, and I am currently relearning French. I plan on learning a few other languages after that, too. One place I would LOVE to visit before I die is Finland. I really dig Finnish rock / metal, and the country itself has an incredibly natural beauty all its own. I feel learning the language would make a trip there all the more enjoyable, and I really dig this site and its style of teaching. Is there any hope soon for a Finnish language course?
Many have applied myself included. I really hope the Duolingo team takes notice! A lot of other languages that have been far less requested have been added recently, so I hope Finnish is next.
Oh, I hope so. I'd absolutely love to have Finnish on here (though, honestly, I'd prefer Northern Sámi!).
Well heck, that sounds pretty interesting, and all-encompassing. That sounds way more useful than just learning single languages. :(
That's cool, though. Thank you for the Wikipedia link!
I'm dying to see a Finnish course on Duolingo. Suomi sounds so beautiful.
It really does sound beautiful! It would also be a much needed challenge on my part. As it is, I can read French (for the most part) just fine, but I have trouble speaking and writing it. I wouldn't mind dropping it all together if Finnish became available.
A lot of us are desperately hoping for a Finnish course on Duolingo. Until that happens, samulili has built a great course on Memrise. Here is the first level: http://www.memrise.com/course/484516/suomi-monostyle-level-1/ and there are two more levels from there if you are more advanced. Make sure you check out the great wiki notes he has added (details on the front page of the course) as those are really helpful.
I hope there is ...hope! :) Sometimes I'm a bit scared, that Finnish compared to all those languages that are constantly demanded (Mandarin, Japanese...) in here would be forgotten, in the other hand seeing Swedish for Russian speakers in the Incubator gives me a little bit of hope. All in all, it's really nice to see a group of people, who are strongly interested in Finnish and always give wonderful response to any topics connected anyhow to Finnish (or even not haha). If there is a slight chance, that someone from the Incubator would notice us, we need to keep on "demanding" Finnish course ;)
OMG yes! I got into the Finnish language through Finnish metal too!!! Particularly Nightwish and Tarja! I also applied also (even though I'm probably not good enough) just to show interest!
Nightwish is awesome! My favorite band is Lordi, though. I love horror themed stuff, and they're music is a really great mix of metal and horror stuffs!
I'm sure Duo plans on having Finnish here someday. There are an awful lot of deserving languages, though, and courses from languages other than English, too, so there's no real way to know when it'll come up. I know people have made it known to Duolingo that they'd be willing to do it, though, so it probably is pretty high up on the list.
Man, I hope a Finnish course will be added soon! I remember I dabbled in it a while back and I frankly fell in love with the language from there! :)
I'd also love to learn Finnish. My paternal family came to the US from Finland around 1900, but unfortunately they switched to English and didn't keep the Finnish up over the generations.
Are there any native Finnish speakers on here? I haven't seen any of them before.
Yes there are, plenty! We just hide in the masses... I applied a couple of days ago to become a mod for English-Finnish courses. No reply yet, however. Fingers crossed!
Ten(s) easily. First of all, people can apply to Incubator even if they're not active on the forums. Secondly, even if they are active, how do you tell whether someone is Finnish or not when most people have usernames and everyone posts in English. Maybe it says so on their profile but you probably don't check every poster's profile.
Yes there are, I would guess several thousands (as I know personally more than twenty).
I want to understand the lyrics of all albuns of Ruoska and Terasbetoni! xD I would like to see a finnish course in duolingo.
