Thank you every hardworking staff of Duolingo , your work is a huge addon to the things i can use to study languages.
Hello! how about being able to see the number of users collectively using duolingo at any given moment, like Skype does- that would be both motivational and inspiring- thanks for this incredible site/idea
That would be very motivational, you're right. I would love to see that. (the total number of users at that minute)
Great idea! I'd also like if Duolingo can start programs for many other languages such as Romanian, Greek, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Armenian, Azeri, Georgian, Hindi, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, Malay, Swahili, Afrikaans. That would be really helpful.
I'm trying to contribute to Japanese courses, and it seems they are starting up.
I have been sent a form to Duolingo Incubator, but (maybe there's not enough people to help on it) Mandarin is still not introduced...
Yes, that would be awesome! So many Latin courses out there are video lecture only, imagine how many people would come here!
I'd love to get back on course with my Malay if that ever comes out. My malay's a bit broken.
I am from Malaysia and I could speak Malay very well and can help contribute to the Malay course. Here's a few sentences written in Malay: Nama saya Abdul Rahim. Saya seorang lelaki. Saya belajar bahasa Belanda, Perancis, Portuguese, Jerman, Itali, dan Sepanyol melalui Duolingo. Translation: My name is Abdul Rahim. I am a man. I learn Dutch, French, Portuguese, German, Italian and Spanish using Duolingo.
some of your (our) desired languages are already close to completition on the incubator!!
I, myself, cannot wait for the indonesian to be completed :)
It's amazing to see how far Duolingo has come! Since your post, and Swahili's release yesterday, with Japanese and Hindi in the works, we're only wating on Armenian, Azeri, Georgian, Arabic, Mandarin, Malay and Afrikaans!
Just a weird question: how did you guys come up with the owl idea. I mean was it plain as day? Did you just say, "We'll make our mascot a cute little green owl," and just go with it? How did that all work out? I'd personaly really like to know!
Now that you think about, I just realized it awhile ago....now I'm curious... :v
I think they made it because they wanted to do it as cute as possible and because owls are smart, they have put it as their mascot.
hey,i agree with all the ones before me.this is graet! i have an idea:pepole from all over the place learn a new languge with duolingo.what if everyone will "study" and transtlate the words into their mother languge as well?you get me? for exempel i speak hebrew and i am learning german,so while learning i can translate everything to hebrew as well.what do you say? soory 4 the long message.anyway if you can reply to me i apprichate it,i willing to help!!!
It's not a bad idea! I would also help with Hungarian:)...although Hungarian is not a widespread language.
Because sometime after he posted in this discussion he deactivated himself by going to settings, and hitting the button deactivate account It's sad when we lose one of our fellow compadres:(
Grazie Signore, You and your team make my Italian and English much more better :)
Definitely. I'm not just learning how to get around in Portuguese-speaking countries, but I'm learning spelling, sentence structure, grammar: Basically, I'm actually learning Portuguese. I can't wait to see Duolingo expand into more languages, and I hope that Duolingo remains a free resource for everybody to use and learn from. Duolingo is doing a better job of teaching me than my teachers ever have. The fact that people have gotten together and created such a wonderful tool makes me happy, and I can't express just how wonderful this is. There are few objectively good things in the world, but Duolingo is one of them.
Duolingo, and the team behind it, are muito legal!
This service is absolute genius!
I've been speaking half-decent Portuguese at a conversational level for a couple of years (my wife is Brazilian) but never had the patience to sit down and study as I always thought it would take the fun out of the language for me... but it's actually really enjoyable and I'm already improving my accuracy with the basics I was never formally taught.
The fact it also translates real-world articles as a by-product is what really takes it to the next level for me. As an experienced developer myself, this has to be one of the most innovative marriages of technology and people I have seen in recent years.
Serious kudos to the Duolingo team!
I am in love with Duolingo, thank you so much. I would happily pay money for a programme like this, but instead I try and do a lot of translations! But I even enjoy doing those :)
I have always wanted to learn other languages but found it hard to actually enjoy the process and me being easily distracted didn't help the matter. With Duolingo I have learned more in the past few weeks than I have in 5 years of trying at school. I can't thank you enough for your work and the great community you have created and all for free! I have mentioned it to a tone of my colleagues and a lot of people I meet at my work place. great work!!!
Duolingo is awesome! I am learning Italian at the moment and it really helps! Thanks duolingo-team. Could you add something to learn Russian? I'd really appreciate that.
I have always loved languages but Duolingo is the first site that actually made grammar seem less daunting for me. I always avoided it as much as possible before. Now I face it and learn it quickly! Gracias, Duolingo.
Yes this has been my favourite tool for learning Spanish. Since the iPhone app came out I've whizzed through the last half of the course.
To be perfectly honest - I've wanted to learn Spanish for years but where I live and how I work always made it very hard to do so.
This is amazing.
The only thing missing is high amounts of output in the target language. It might be worth looking into offering something similar to Verbling if you want people to stay on the site once they're 'finished'.
Thank you guys so much for the ability to learn a new language in a new and entertaining way. When most of my friends are off playing games on their computer, I'm off on Duolingo. This way more fun than any video game.
I agree. Thank you very much. All the languages here is so much fun to learn. Now, I can read more efficiently Spanish. ^_^
I just started duolingo a few days ago and it's addicting. I finish a section then say I'm done for the day but as soon as I have a free moment, I'm back on. Thanks duolingo team!
i love this web site. my boy friend and i are going to costa rica to visit his grandma who only speaks spanish. i really want to be able to talk with her, but i don't have the time to take a class or the money to pay for rosetta stone. this web site is perfect; it's fun and easy to use. my hat is off to the duolingo creators and staff. thank you. keep up the good work.
This is absolutely fantastic!! Absolutely incredible site, I shall spread the word. I am curious though. Upon completing all the German lessons on here and getting everything to 'the max' how many words will I know and have potentially mastered?
hear, hear - you duolingo people are great. I love this thing, I actually enjoy doing it, sometimes I chose to do it over watching television. My spanish was zero when I started and now I've learnt so much that I'm working towards actually having a conversation in spanish, something that seemed so far away when I first started. Thank you!
I agree, Duolingo is awesome!
Congrats to the first discussion on Duo to get 1000 up votes!!!
what I notice is that the person who posted this, duo1man, 12 months ago seems to be inactive for a long time, ironically. :)
So glad some mentioned this on Twitter! I did two years of evening classes a few years ago and haven't had much practice since. I have already done two exercises, and I'm going to work on one every day until I'm back up to speed.
I was lacking the motivation to re-learn Italian before visiting there on a holiday, but I'm definitely going to Italy with conversational-standard language now!
Between you guys/gals and the people over at Quizlet language learning is fun!
[How a 30 year old can be so excited at 11:20pm is beyond me!]
Keep up the good work!
Yes, I agree! I'm only new here but I love all the work you put in! Keep it up and well done!
this is the best site on the internet to learn a language so thank you guys for making this possible for us :)
Yes... but I think that the Duolingo team is doing a lot already. I think we should be grateful for what we have right now, and if they do, it will be a fun surprise for us all. Yes, it would be nice, but sometimes, we should I think that we should just be thankful for what they are doing right now. Thanks, Duolingo!
the work that the staff produce at Duolingo is very appreciated by everyone on Duolingo. THANK YOU
I share your gratitude. I just climbed the German tree! Danke vielmals Duolingo, ich habe viel gelernt und freue mich sehr.
I agree with this but...still weird that the Top All Time Discussion is one that only has a title and isn't spelled correctly. XD
yes i agree this is one of my favorite links!! and i have learned a lot with spanish and german!!
This tool is just so amazing! However, I wonder if it's able to use it to learn English if I'm not local English speaker?
You can learn English! Just scroll over to the little flag that you have on the top, click "more", and go to "I want to learn [insert what your learning here]", go down to where it says ingles, click on what you mainly speak and there you go! You can learn English!
I agree. The staff members always work hard to help us adults (and children) learn all kinds of languages. Thank you, Duolingo! I love learning fun!
I studied Spanish at night-school years ago and really struggled. I find your site absolutely brilliant and I am making much more confident progress using it. It is an example of the sort use of computers and the internet that fifteen years ago I would say "one day ............. ". The model that you use could also be used for teaching mathematics and also other high school subjects that personalises to the level of the learner. Have you considered linking the levels to personalised printable certificates? Many people would find this motivating, especially in a school situation. Once again, thank you.
omg yess thank you so much!!! i just moved to germany and as a 15 year old its really hard to live in a country without knowing the language. this is helping me so much with learning german and gaining the confidence to speak with those around me!!!!
Just wanted to chime in, kudos to you guys! Fine job in making a structured, free environment to learn.
Thanks to all of you! Not sure you need more 'press coverage' but just in case, here's an article I've put on my blog about your great work: http://www.thegoodmooc.com/2013/04/a-review-of-duolingo.html
ya, and like Rosetta Stone costs money, and this is free, and even better than Rosetta Stone! !Gracias, Duolingo! Merci Duolingo!
i just started this app few days ago as i have to learn Italian i must say it's very good than other site.
Duo Lingo = GameChanger . I'll be sure you're nominated for the GC500 list - www.GameChangers500.com It's argued that the reason we've shifted between each of the 4 great epochs of civilization is because of a breakthrough in communication technology.... which then led to sharing information in ways that previously wasn't possible (think handwritten scripture, printing press, TV/Radio). The internet is obviously the backbone of this current age change we're going through.... and duolingo is adding jet fuel to the revolution! Thank you to everyone at duolingo for this valuable contribution to humanity. Perhaps one day you can create your own point system in the office that measure how many hours of code = how many lives changed.
Same here. Thanks to everyone. I'm studying Duo-lingo Italian 1-2 hours per day, in preparation for moving to Italy next year.
Just wanted to add thanks to this thread. I had a lot of trouble practising languages before... now, it's downright fun, and I'm considering learning new languages I before had no interest in.
Also, I LOVE your owl mascot!
Thanks. I really like how you can learn the rules more by doing that actually studying grammar in a dry way. Trial and error works for me.
Undoubtedly an amazing use of collective resources, and unbelievably fun and helpful.
I just wanted to add my gratitude. This has been an amazing supplement for practicing Spanish as it what fills any extra moment. What you have created here is pretty awesome. Thanks a lot for your efforts.
At present those are mainly European languages, but my daughter wants very much to have Korean on the list. It would be great if there are more Asian languages. Anyway, Duolingo is doing a great job! Thank you Duolingo!
Ciao! just wanted to say I'm super addicted to this site. I've been on it for a week and I'm already at level 10 in italian and i've completed about half of the learning-tree. I can't get enough! It's amazing opening up the immersion section and being able to read and understand articles in italian. I can't see myself ever growing tired of duolingo! Thanks a million!
you guys are so great! a big thanks to all of you! muito obrgido! from the Philippines
Duolingo is probably the best thing i have ever encountered on the web. I am so happy and feel so empowered with Duo at my back. Millions of thanks to the team behind this Great App.
I want to join duo1man and thank all those who have made Duolingo possible. It's really amazing!!! Thank You!!!
wow. now i actually learn my francais! Thank you so much guys! really do hope for anyy other language to show up. keep up the good works! :D
You guys have achieved targeting learners of all aspects. People who learn through visual cues, hearing, writing, and reading are definitely enabled to learn another language in such a short amount of time for the price of zip, zilch, and nada.
I love Duolingo! FINALLY I think I'm making some progress in learning a language. Yea-a-a-ah!
I am also very grateful!
Dude, do you realize how many vote-ups you got? I think you might make the record of the most vote-ups!
Agreed, Duo Lingo Peeps. You're a god send in a world full of crappy computer translators and lazy high school language teachers that i've come across
I am so thankful for Duolingo. It has broadened my horizons and has inspired me to aspire to be a global man when i am older
I love doulingo!!! Its the first website for language learning that actually helped me, not to mention the fact that its free(which really helps a high school student)!!! Please add Japanese and Russian soon!!!!
Thanks duolingo! I always wanted to learn french but school seemed expensive but i found this website and now i'm learning french. You guys should accept donations, when i finish learning french i would love to show my appreciation. Thank you!
I don't think any other discussion has over 1000 votes! Congrats duo1man for making a awesome discussion!
I would also like to thank Duolingo for the great work they have put on this website. I look forward to using it and to meeting it's community :)
I just want to say thank you guys so much. I am taking a high school Spanish class and I'm still in middle school and you guys have been so helpful. I understand the concepts and the grammar etc. and I just want to thank all the people behind it and all the people who encourage you to keep going. Thank you guys so much
Thank you, I love this program. I love that it is on my time frame, easy to use, and on both my phone and computer. Convenience is everything.
Amazing interface and a really nice community! I'm in love with duolingo <3
Thank you very much Duolingo team for providing such a great service!
I am having great fun refreshing my Spanish, and starting a new language for the first time; German!
Thank you to the staff at Duolingo. I don't mind when people make suggestions, but the complaints are often an annoying and unfounded sense of entitlement. It takes constant diligence and a ton of generosity to run and continue to improve this site. I am very grateful
