Do you want to suggest translation content?

  • 1563

If you have any suggestions of translation content for us to upload on Duolingo, please send us the links!

We are looking above all for complete websites or blogs to upload (rather than single articles).

This can be for any language available on Duolingo.

Please make sure that:

  • it isn't too hard to translate. News and blog articles about sports, technology, current events, history and culture are a good target.

  • it isn't profane or inapropriate.

  • it isn't under a strict copyright. Creative commons is usually fair game. Such sites will have the following labels (often near the bottom of the page or in the "about" section): CC, BY or SA.

  • it isn't restricted to "non-commercial use only".

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I'm learning German. In the Immersion section there seems to be not many German articles that need to be translated, and many of them are Wikipedia pages about niche subjects (no surprise that anything that's popular would already has an English version). I'd like to do something more interesting and lively, like news.

I tried googling for German news sites using Creative commons, and I found this: http://www.02elf.net/

It looks like a very good source for translation. It's using CC-BY. It covers all kinds of news, like politics, sports, finance, culture, technology, etc. And I believe it publishes new articles regularly.

Perhaps you could upload that whole site and automatically pull in new articles as they are added on that site?

Thanks for the suggestion BettyJJ! Looks promising, we'll take a look :)

And in the meantime when you find something neat (and CC of course) you can share it through the upload link: http://www.duolingo.com/translations/upload

It's for individual documents for now, but we're working on it!

I was wondering which license is allowed in duolingo, since creative commons has a lot of derivatives. One of which does not allow any derivative works. Does translation fall under a derivative work? There is also NC = Non-commercial license, since Duolingo, is a business are they allowed to use it?

Can you please clarify which of the ones below are actually allowed?

Creative Commons:

  • Attribution (CC BY)
  • Attribution Share Alike (CC BY-SA)
  • Attribution No Derivatives (CC BY-ND)
  • Attribution Non-Commercial (CC BY-NC)
  • Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike (CC BY-NC-SA)
  • Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND)

The Neusprech blog would probably be fun and very, very challenging for a beginner. They literally deal with newspeak. http://neusprech.org/

The German wikibooks project has several history books which are deemed "complete". https://de.wikibooks.org/wiki/Regal:Geschichte For example "Die sechs Frauen von Heinrich VIII" and https://de.wikibooks.org/wiki/Die_sechs_Frauen_von_Heinrich_VIII. and "Der Wettlauf zum Mond" https://de.wikibooks.org/wiki/Der_Wettlauf_zum_Mond_%E2%80%93_Die_Rolle_der_Raumfahrt_im_Kalten_Krieg

Are translations considered derivative works?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jbxf

Yes, they are: "A “derivative work” is a work based upon one or more preexisting works, such as a translation,..." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derivative_work

You can now upload some content through this link: http://duolingo.com/#/translations

We'll add a Music category. For now, you can use the "entertainment" category.
