Lave is more like making, creating something.

But anyway 'gøre' is what they use in this case. Maybe u just have to learn it and there is no rule :P

It's a fixed phrase, I believe. The applications of 'lave' and 'gøre' don't correlate too well with 'make' and 'do' in English.

Though 'hvad gører du?' should be fine as well.
