Who thinks in English for real?

Greetings! I want to ask you guys. Do you think in english when you're studying? I mean, everytime here in Duolingo or another place. I always try to do it in everything, so it really helps me. For example, watching videos, tv series, movies, talking to friends and writing. I want to know if you do this everytime you study or not, and if you do it, just tell me your experience about it then, I can share mine with all of you and create a dynamic conversation. Advices are accepted!

I did that alot, back when my English was not so good. Words I did not know I substituted for the German word (my motherlanguage). When a word I didn't know came up alot, I looked it up.

Now it is normal for me to think in English and I was very happy, when I realized, that I started to do it for Spanish as well! Though it is not very often yet... I should force it more.

That's great buddy! Excellent and I'm happy for you. I do that all the time, even when I'm talking in spanish I try to translate the words that I'm saying in English, I can tell for sure. It's something crazy but it works! Another tip that it work is: Math operations in the language that you learn. I'm doing it in English and wow it's really crazy and difficult because I do the math in spanish for inercia, I mean in my mind I solve the ecuation but BAAAM! I realized that it's not good and I repeat all the process!

I didn't even really notice when it happened but after a few years of learning I naturally started to think in English. Now I probably think in English the most - sometimes I know how to say something in English and I have hard time translating it into my native language. I try to do that with Spanish now - for example when I read a sentence in Spanish, I do not translate it into English but I try to understand it. I'm not sure how to explain it - I just try to block thoughts in any languages beside Spanish while I'm learning Spanish. It worked with English (maybe even a little too well?) so maybe I'll work this time as well ;)

Excellent Marta (I think ;)) I understand you, that happens to me too. Let's see: Hola Marta, ¿cuál es tu idioma nativo? I think in English all the time even when I'm talking in spanish, like I said before ;) However, I try to see movies with subtitles and without it (this last is more difficult) and try to understand and learn a lot of words, senteneces and modism! I watch The Big Bang Theory, trust me. That series really helps me a lot!

Mi idioma nativo es polaco. Yo he comenzado estudiar el español hace tres meses y inglés hace... muchos años. (¿14? quizás) Ahora yo veo una serie español. El título es Gran hotel. (I hope I wrote it properly) And I can pretty much understand most of it, it gets worse when I want to write something but I'm working on it.

It's a great way to learn a language - you can watch what you like and learn at the same time. And you learn more useful things that the typical textbook-like phrases. I've watched just a few episodes of Big Bang Theory, but I think I'll watch some more. It seemed fun ;)

I'm going to accomplish my second year learning English on my own on 14th May 2015. I don't count all the bad years of learning it at school.

And of course I learnt German from scratch nine months ago. I'm currently doing a lot of review.

Anyway, your Spanish is very good. Keep it up!

Of course it doesn't bother me, I'm always happy to know what mistakes I've made - that let's me know what to improve ;)

I've been learning German for six years at school and I couldn't say even the simplest things. I've learnt more on Duolingo in just few months. Your English is really great!

Thanks, now I'm starting to learn more grammar ;)

Just go here and add a new language:

In your case, I recommend trying a third language from English. I'm learning German from English. :)

Excelente! Eres polaca :O yo soy de Venezuela! Excellent! Read english books is awesome and it really helps. On the other hand, I recommend you that TV series, I learned a lot with it. On the other hand, you still watching the spanish series and read in spanish, but don't forget to think in spanish :D Too many "spanish" :p so, the better things when we are studying something is making mistakes and don't be afraid! Thanks Marta :D

I'm trying to do that while reading Harry Potter in Spanish now. I'm also trying to think about things I'm doing everyday - in Spanish. For example if I cook I try to translate all the actions into Spanish. It helps to learn, as well ;)

I never thought of doing that, thanks for the idea. I'll try it out.

Excellent just try it with everything! I mean, read books in spanish and just try to think in spanish like you think with your native language (English, right?) It is awesome and I don't know but the process in your mind is cool, all the ideas combine and they explode in learning!

I speak English natively, but I do that for Spanish when I can. My mother and I have small conversations in Spanish sometimes that drive my sisters crazy, as they can't speak it : ) It is helpful and even though this is my first year learning a new language, it is cool when I can relate words from everyday life into a different language.

Hahaha cool buddy! That is excellent! I can imagine your sister hahaha! Good, really good, I can tell. Learning a new language is awesome and maybe it could be so hard sometimes but that's the target, don't you think? If you want to practice just let's go! I'm here Critann1.

It is always good to learn to think in the language you're learning instead of trying to translate word per word, which is a very common "beginner" mistake.

My native language is Spanish and I've been studying English for about 20 years now (I'm 30 so I started pretty young at school :p ), I watched movies without subtitles, I learned songs, I read books, newspapers, etc.

Nowadays I practice my English in Twitter and forums (I love football and tennis for example so I talk a lot about that!), I exchange opinions with natives and non-natives and it has kept me sharp, I have learned a lot of idioms, phrasal verbs, false friends and "in" expressions that I wouldn't have known/understood if I hadn't taken the leap and threw myself into the world of English.

I no longer have to think in Spanish when I read/speak/write English, the words just flow due to all the practice I've had.

My goal is to have that same confidence level in Dutch one day :)

https://www.duolingo.com/manuel15

Thansk for comment my post ngpaez! I hope you get better in Dutch! I love football to my friend! Can we practice? I mean, I want to talk in English about every topic but I really want to talk football jargon! On the other hand, I watch a lot of series in english with subtitles and read english websites like you but I try hard to think in English when I'm doing everything, for example when I reading in spanish I just try to think the text in English. I do a lot of things everyday to get better in this language, step by step I will do it!

Hola manuel15. Your English is developing well. Better than my Spanish is right now. I am a native English speaker and now learning Spanish. I am advancing okay but I hit a wall with the Spanish past tense verbs sometimes. We are all learning with Duolingo so please accept this as respectful advice. "Advice" never becomes plural in English. Give me advice; I took advice; I need advice; I want advice; they gave me advice. Advice (noun) is what is given. The act of giving advice is called advising. To advise (verb) is the action of giving advice (noun). So...please advise me is another way to ask for advice. Good learning!

Hello TerryMay! Thanks for your comment! I'm still learning like you! And this is very helpful for me and for all of you because I don't be afraid to make mistakes, in fact it is one of the ways to have a good learning, I think! Can I change it to "Give me advice" then?
