German Was ist?

Within the lesson I get the following question

Was ist?

the options are

What is serious? What is wrong? What is new?

Isn't "Was ist?" just what is?

Yes, it does mean "what is", but when it stands on its own, it means "what's wrong" or "what's new".

"what´s wrong?" would be "was ist los?" "what´s new?" would be "was gibt`s Neues?"

"was ist?" on its own really is missing something to make sense.

You need context or at least intonation to determine the meaning.
