Is "tomorrow we have to flee the country" acceptable? Or does "abandonar" not carry that connotation?

I know "abandon the country" is not good English, and should not be offered as a translation. "Abandon" refers to people, if it's transitive at all.

I think you're right, it should be "to flee".
