Duolingo's pronunciation of 'er' and 'ihr'

After a search I see that there has been many discussions here in the forum over the difficulty distinguishing between Ms. Duolingo's pronunciation of 'er' and 'ihr' (especially when the phrase provides no additional contextual information qua case, verb conjugation etc.)

I personally find the 'slowed down' voice particularly misleading when trying to make the distinction. When 'er' is pronounced slowly it really sounds like 'ihr'.

Was meinen Sie dazu?

I've never had this problem. Maybe it takes some getting used to.

The pronunciation of (Person) always throws me, I just had it now and it sounded like (calzone) to me, ha ha, but of course must be the way the brain thinks as after it showed the word it sounded clearer to me, of course hearing "person" all your life then here it pronounced "purzone" kinda throws ya off.

Would a native German speaker make a huge distinction between the two in a casual conversation?

Absolutely. They're not homophones so you should always be able to distinguish between them.
