Update woes

So is anyone else having to redo 80% of their progress on the language tree because of the new updates? :/

I was put off a bit at first, but it's actually been helpful going over some of this material again. And isn't learning—not completing the tree—the ultimate reason for being here? Besides, I'm getting lots of new lingots for completing "new" lessons!

I'm still a bit put off, to be honest. I like that the tree seems "cleaner" somehow. However, since I'm learning French from English and Spanish which I kept 'synchronized' (that is, same lessons done in both tree on one day), this is rather demotivation (just for me personally). A 'sync' is not possible anymore, which actually kept me on going forward in both French and Spanish.

I may just drop one of them.

I was also a bit put off at first. I was getting used to seeing a golden tree. It's refreshing to be able to do a lesson quickly with the earlier sections.

I've challenged myself by deciding I'm not going to look at the text on the left when I hear audio in the earlier sections. So far so good. :)

I'm also frustrated with this. I had completed the whole tree, and now, I'm having to go back and redo entire lessons instead of just polishing up weak spots. I suppose any practice is good, but there aren't many new words or phrases in the lessons that I'm retaking. Some, I haven't seen any changes from before.

While I don't have a problem with adding more content to the course if that's what has happened, I did find it quite confusing just now when I did the first "extra" lesson just now (Common Phrases). Every single word in the lesson was one I already learned the first time around, so now I'm wondering whether there were new words in the lessons it already marked as done, or whether they just spread the same words over an extra lesson.

I just found it today. It's a very discouraging moment. Yesterday I missed a day due to a family crisis after 251 straight days and went back to a zero streak, and then, a mere 4 lessons from the end of the tree, I discover that I will have to do practically the whole thing over again. Yes, the point is to learn French, but the method is to provide game-like motivation. First they eliminated the XP totals so you can no longer see how far you have to go to the next level, and now this. It was really not helpful to someone like me, who can generally spare no more than half an hour a day to work on Duo and who was so close to completing the tree. It now feels like I'll never get it done. I'm not going to quit, because daily practice is essential, but a lot of the fun has been taken out of it. Very discouraging. I have to add that I have enjoyed Duo very much, but it's frustrating that they seem so rarely respond to the mistakes that are pointed out to them. I see so many examples of English phrases that are awkward or nonsensical that it makes me mistrust the French phrases, and when I look them up I find that the meanings, while rarely wrong, are often third or fourth choices. I guess approximate French is better than no French, but it makes me doubt the way the Duolingo authors put the whole thing together. Does anyone even read the comments and posts?

The effect obviously varies depending where you were in the tree what shape that tree was. I am happy for you that you have had the time energy to get back inside a few days.

In my case, I was roughly half way down the tree before the change. It seemed that on average two sections and sometime three lost gold each day. Each of these required a single test to "Strengthen". As I said above, I can only give an hour to DL per day .I use some of that to translate in "Immersion" for real world practice.

Allowing 10 minutes per test (which is only 30 seconds per question assuming no mistakes), I was barely keeping pace with the loss of gold. I was gaining only 2 or 3 lessons per week in the new section at the base of my tree. I had slowed down to 1 new section added per month ... which was depressing enough.

Now roughly 20-25 sections have became "incomplete" , some with more than one lesson required. At my present rate of working, I calculate that I have been set back by two months or more. By the time I clean up the tree to reach my old target section, I will have lost momentum and focus in the new section slowing me further.

Further since the tree now contains more sections, more of them will lose gold per day I may be faced with the prospect that all my available time effort will be consumed with "strengthening" so I make no progress at all per week. This will be a serious disincentive to use DL at all.

Of course you can do what you want. There aren't any rules about having to have everything golden or whatever. Just ignore some of the new lessons and carry on as you were if you want to.

In my case redoing some of the early lessons is very quick, with the answers only taking a few seconds each. So I think I will catch up a lot of these in just a couple of hours.

Thanks for that insight.

I was still thinking that the situation after this update was the same as when you are working through the tree i.e. an incomplete section at one level locks access to the next. I should have recognised that I can access any of the sections that are not gold now, however far back in the tree they are. This applies both those few where strengthen has been suggested and the many where new lessons have been added.

So technically it would be possible to ignore the effects of this update, apart from those going forward from my current position.

However it has been my method to keep the tree golden, on the basis that if DL suggests I should revisit material it is a reasonable idea (even if not absolutely necessary). Aside: it's also easier to decide what to do next if your tree is gold :-).

Perhaps it may be possible to do some of the lessons faster than I have allowed .. so the knock back may not be as bad as I calculated .. but I stand by my suggestion that the new tree could have been implemented without these problems (see my previous post on this thread)

This update was poorly thought through and will cause some users to abandon DL.

Yes, some lessons appear to have no new words but have to be repeated as new. Another lesson may only have two words to learn which makes the lesson combinations quite tedious. But I find the whole restructuring of the lessons in the tree worthwhile; lessons appeared to be more efficiently reordered based on importance and function first before say a lesson full of more adjectives. An example would be the short new lesson 'Demonstratives 1' which explains the -ci -là suffixes earlier on where I previously had to find a discussion thread to explain this.

Yeah... but.... most of the units that are now "unfinished" only require one lesson to complete. Then, you get more lingots! You (we!) are getting "compensated" with essentially very easy double-dipping on the lingots - we got the lingots the first time we completed the unit, and now we get them again with very little work.

I know, I know... eventually you end up with a ton of lingots, and not much to spend them on. But still, I thought it was a nice little bonus to make up for having to go back through the tree and redo things.

So, I can forgive Duo for this one ;-))) (And refreshing those early lessons is so far turning out to be less painful than I expected!)

Yup. Very demoralizing. I was already struggling to "strengthen" my topics. Now it looks like I have to start all over almost. I'm already spending nearly 2 hours a day. ::pout:: I was already in the last 1/3 and hoping to finish before I go to France this summer.

March 4, 2015

My tree is back golden again after working yesterday and today on it. Luckily, most of the new skills required just one lesson to be completed, so it was relatively painless, but with a lot of busy work. Some of the new lessons are completed much quicker than others, and some others have numerous mistakes. In particular, the new lessons on negatives and prepositions are troublesome if you do not put exactly the same translation (even though alternative translations should be perfectly acceptable). The robot is mispronouncing some new words too. And to compound things, the old mistakes are still there and haven't been fixed!

My overall opinion is that the few extra words here and there do not compensate for the extra work that I put in "regoldening" the tree; however, since I don't like leaving things undone and had some time to spend, I finished it anyway. I had fun reporting the mistakes though and for that alone, I think it is a good exercise. Duolingo should at least have given us a level upgrade by going through all of this pain again!

Wait, do you mean that it ungilded a lot of your lessons, or that it is acting like you haven't even done a lot of them? It is showing that a lot of my skills still have lessons that I haven't even done yet, but there are way more of them than just the updates, and I just did a couple and they are of things I'd already done.

I got several "new" lessons, but they were for words I've already learned. Some were new, though.

While this may improve the tree for someone starting out, this is a ridiculous imposition for anyone trying to fit Duolingo into a busy life.

Even the Coach settings acknowledge that a target of 30 XP is challenging and that equates to only 3 Lessons in mid tree. For someone 50% or more down the tree, the old "Strengthen" mechanism was already "ungolding" 2 or 3 sections each day making it very difficult to actually move ahead.

Now this restructuring has rendered 30-40% of my sections incomplete ,,, and of course the "Strengthen" still kicks in. How can I or anyone else who cannot give Duolingo more than an hour a day be expected to clean up the mess sufficiently to be able to return to pushing onwards?

What should have happened is that the tree could have been overhauled but where tests had been added to a section a current user who had completed that section should have been credited as having done that extra test That is reasonable. Basically all you have done in most cases is split a section that had n tests into one with n+1 tests in order to test more words and forms.

Incomplete sections would of course gain the new tests and "strengthen" would still eventually kick in on completed section to test on any new words.

I suspect you will lose many of your most valuable users i.e those motivated to improve because you have made it hard for them to make progress

Exactly. I was reaching the point in my tree where the lessons were actually useful to me and now I have to waste time with remedial exercises. I know where my weak points are and I review those. I don't have an hour a day to spend on this. I think this update is poorly designed, pedagogically.

March 3, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/CarlosA.Ro8

I also have the same experience. Instead of correcting the mistakes in the French tree (which are numerous!) -- past subjunctives, anyone? -- they added more content, which will no doubt be prone to more errors.

Clean the house first, then get the new furniture.

March 4, 2015

Generally I tend to trust Duo and not complain about my awesome free french school, but I did feel like I pretty much wasted my time now doing the first three marked lessons over again, I'm not feeling challanged at all, and I'm a little bit bummed towards the next waisted two or three days of goldening my tree again :/

March 4, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/BettyBHancock

I've been trying since before Christmas to advance past my current position but spend so much time keeping the tree gold I have only advanced one branch and now this? I feel like I'm starting over! I'm sure it will be useful, but now I don't think I'll ever finish.

March 4, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/alanjwhite

As you say the "strengthen" vs "progress" issue is difficult enough to cope with when one reaches mid-tree but no longer has unlimited time for DL.

One would hope that DL recognise that while Revision is useful and may offer some comfort to the student that nothing has been lost, people are much better motivated by visible improvement.

The knock back from this update is particularly demoralising if it is your habit to try keeping your tree gold like you and I both prefer

I'm going to take a step back, calm down and try (somehow) to find time for a DL fest over the next two weekends before making a decision to exit

We are having a snow day today (icy roads, no snow yet) so I'm going to try to get some of these done. So far they are going quickly, there are just.so.many.

March 4, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/superfly_jon

Well 80% of my skills are not gold but this isn't the same as having to redo 80% of the progress at all. I've got 50 lessons to redo, out of 200 in skills that are no longer gold - this is about 50, I've got about 40 that are still gold.

So this is roughly 15% of my lessons I need to redo, not 80%.

I love that they have added more content, something that loads of people have been asking about for ever on these forums!
