Dia daoibh!

Welcome to day 3 of SnaG 2015! In today's challenge, we're getting musical!

But before that, I'd like to announce that galaxyrocker won yesterday's challenge and has been awarded the title "Honorary Irishman/Irishwoman by Recommendation of Master Storyteller Samuel Beckett"!

Challenge 3 - Dúshlán 3

Today's challenge is a translation challenge, with a musical twist!

  • Challenge: Translate the lyrics of a song
  • Theme: Irish-language pop music
  • Top prize: 15 lingots
  • Title awarded: Stay tuned

So, the challenge is: translate the lyrics of TG Lurgan's Irish version of "Wake Me Up". You can translate as many verses as you feel capable of, or, alternatively, you can translate line by line!

"But wait a sec Alex! Aren't the lyrics of the Irish version just a translation of the English?"

No, not really. Some of the ideas remain between the two versions, but there are some changes and a nice few sayings and idioms ;)

Lyrics

Video

Fáinne fí i gcoim na hoíche. (Níl) 'tada riamh nach mbíonn thart. Diabhail fhios a'm cá bhfuil deireadh mo scéil Ach táim ar an mbealach ceart.

Deir siad liom gan a dhul sa tseans, Nach dtagann ciall roimh aois. Bhuel 'sé m'aistear é, Ní léir cén fhad a mhairfidh sé, 'Sé togha ar aon chaoi.

So Lig mé saor ón suan 'tá orm. (Tai)speáin 'om bóthar éasca cothrom. Bainfidh mé ceann scríbe amach, sí m'aidhm, Cíbe treo átá i ndán.

(Tá) Mé ag iompar úalach mór an tsaoil Ach níl a'm ach péire lámh. Suile troma is an ghrian a dhul faoi Ach ní chodlaíonn mé go sámh.

"Bris amach agus tú fós sach óg." Chinnigh mé le dul in aghaidh. Seo mo ré, Seasfaidh mé an fód, 'S leanfaidh mé ar aghaidh.

Athscríbhinn

HEATHERMAGOO: Dia duit! heathermagoo anseo!

Tá TB4 (TeddyBearFour) ag glacadh páirte i Seachtain na Gaeilge le sraith teilifíse nua “Gaeilgeoir.”

Táimid ar na hoileáin Árann inniu. Is maith liom ceol traidisiúnta. An t-ábhar atá á phlé againn an tseachtain seo ná portaireacht.

Oh! Féach ar an té atá ann. Seo fear atá ina chónaí anseo.

Gabh mo leithscéal, a dhuine chóir. Dia duit!

Hello. Heathermagoo here! TB4 is taking part in Seachtain na Gaeilge with a new TV series “Gaeilgeoir”. We are here today in the Aran Islands. I like traditional music. And our question this week is “What is lilting?”
Oh, look. Here’s a local resident. Excuse me, sir. Hello!

GAEILGEOIR: Dia 's Muire dhuit. Is strainséir tú. An féidir liom cabhrú leat?

Hello to you too. You’re a stranger. Can I help you?

HEATHERMAGOO: Déanaim staidéar ar Gaeilge trí Duolingo. Tá mé ag obair le cainéal teilifíse TB4. An féidir liom ceist a fhiafraí díot? Ar chuala tú riamh ar portaireacht?

I’m studying Irish on Duolingo. I am working for TV channel TB4. May I ask you a question? Have you ever heard of lilting?

GAEILGEOIR: Portaireacht? Is amhránaíocht é an portaireacht. Rinneamar portaireacht sula raibh gramophone againn. Is cuimhin liom nuair a bhí mo dheirfiúr geallta. Bhí muid níos mó ná sásta. Rinneamar portaireacht agus rinc gach duine. Is féidir leat tuilleadh eolais a fháil anseo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CMtBIMIS0Q Déan iarrach air!

Lilting? Lilting is singing! We used to lilt before we had record players. I remember when my sister got engaged. We were so happy. We lilted and everyone danced. You can learn more about it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CMtBIMIS0Q You try it!

HEATHERMAGOO: Ceart go leor. Dee-doodledy-doodledy-dum-dum-dum, Dee-doodledy-doodledy-dum-dum-dum, Dee-doodledy-doodledy-dum-dum-dum, Dee-doodledy-doodledy-DUM-DUM-DUM!!! (Léimeann sí) Iontacht! Go raibh maith agat, a dhuine chóir.

Okay. Dee-doodledy-doodledy-dum-dum-dum … (She hops around) Thank you, sir.

And thank you kind viewers.
Be sure and join us for the next episode of G-A-E-I-L-G-E-O-I-R!!!

Future episodes (actually no future episodes planned) could include these famous Gaeilgeoirí and (very important during SnaG) Aspiring Gaeilgeoirí.
You may know of others and I’ll be happy to add them to the liosta:

  • Clíona Ní Chíosain (Aisteoir: Aifric )
  • Obama (Uachtarán na Stáit Aontaithe: very SnaG, “Tá áthas orm bheith in Éireann”)
  • Liadh Ní Riada (Irish Member of European Parliament: went on language strike stailc teanga, speaking only Irish going about her duties. She tweeted:”Beidh mé ag dul ar #StailcTeanga ar feadh @SnaGaeilge agus mé sa Bhruiséil.. Bígí liom!”)
  • Sonia O’Sullivan (Lúthchleasaí cáiliúil: umpteen medals, now a sports commentator)
  • Duo (Ulchabhán glas agus cáiliúil: Famous Gaeilge-speaking green owl.)
  • Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto (Aisteoirí: Yup! Here are Captain Kirk and Spock as Gaeilge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW6SgGpmCls )

Here is my attempt at the whole song, I know a lot of it will be wrong (including my spelling!), ach bainfidh mé triail as!!

A vicious circle in the middle of the night. Nothing is ever over. The devil knows where my story will end. But im on the right way.

They tell me i wont have a chance, that sense doesnt come before age. Well its my journey, its not clear how long it will take, its (togha-tough?) anyway.

So free me from this slumber. Show me the easy level road. I will find a destination, its my aim, whatever direction is fated.

Im carrying a big load of life, but i only have a pair of hands. Heavy eyes and the sun is going under (down), but i dont sleep peacefully.

Break out and your still (sach-relatively?) young. I (chinnigh-???is this a word?) going on. This is my life, i will stand on the fence, and i will continue on.

Any help with mistakes is appreciated!!! These are the words i had to look up; Togha-Couldnt find it, took a guess Úalach-load Sach-Could only get a result from google translate so not entirely sure its correct (relatively) Chinnigh-Couldnt find anywhere (looked for cinnigh) Ré-life Fód-fence

Does i ndán mean fated because i seem to recall that but am not entirely sure

Just read back over it and realised a lot of the "agus" should actually mean "while" instead of "and"

A few things. fánne fí is not "vicious circle". togha means pick, choice. And my guess is chinnigh was supposed to be coinnigh

Is choice/pick not "rogha"

https://www.duolingo.com/galaxyrocker

Can use either. I'd say it's dialectal.

im from leinster myself so its a bit of a mix of every dialect spoken here, depends on where your teacher is from really. Thats why i thought of rogha

Ar áis aris SNG an dara lá

A woven ring under cover of night. There is nothing ever, that does not end. Devil! I know where my story ends. . I am on the right path

They say to me "not to go along with chance." Doesn't sense come before age. Well, this is my journey. It is not clear how long it will last.. It is a choice made none-the-less

So cut me free from the sleep that is upon me. Show me the road that is both easy and level. I will cut one furrow out, that is my aim. What ever direction, it is fate.

I am carrying a large load of life. But I have but two hands. Eyes that are heavy and the sun that is going down. But I do not sleep easily.

"Break out you who are yet satisfied and young" I chose to go forward. This is is my life span. I will stand upon the turf. And I will follow on.

I want to go back and hear the tune so I can get a better sense of the rhythm. Anyway, I found this great practice, despite it sounding a bit clunky.. Thanks to everyone who is participating, correcting (gently) and cheering us on.

Editing as i go...cat is attacking me

Fáinne fí i gcoim na hoíche. (Níl) 'tada riamh nach mbíonn thart. Diabhail fhios a'm cá bhfuil deireadh mo scéil Ach táim ar an mbealach ceart.

Fi = faoi? or figh, woven? just going on galaxy rocker saying its not vicious.

A circle under cover of the night. There is nothing ever without end. Divil if i know where my storys gonna end. But i'm on the right path.

Deir siad liom gan a dhul sa tseans, Nach dtagann ciall roimh aois. Bhuel 'sé m'aistear é, Ní léir cén fhad a mhairfidh sé, 'Sé togha ar aon chaoi.

They tell me not to take the chance. That sense does not come in front of age. Well its my journey, it's not clear how long it will last. It is a great choice in any case.

So Lig mé saor ón suan 'tá orm. (Tai)speáin 'om bóthar éasca cothrom. Bainfidh mé ceann scríbe amach, sí m'aidhm, Cíbe treo átá i ndán.

So, set me free from from the slumber thats upon me. Show me the flat and easy road. I'll work a destination out, that's my aim. Grassy mountain paths lay in store. (erm...i think)

(Tá) Mé ag iompar úalach mór an tsaoil Ach níl a'm ach péire lámh. Suile troma is an ghrian a dhul faoi Ach ní chodlaíonn mé go sámh.

Im carrying the great burden of life. And i have nought but a pair of hands. Heavy eyes and the sun is going down. But i dont sleep softly (go to sleep easily?)

"Bris amach agus tú fós sach óg." Chinnigh mé le dul in aghaidh. Seo mo ré, Seasfaidh mé an fód, 'S leanfaidh mé ar aghaidh.

Break out while your still young enough/ in your prime. Ive decided against that. Its my time and ill stand my ground. And ill go on ahead

Oh, yeah I should've clarified in the main post. I'll do so now, thanks :) You can translate as many sections as you feel capable of doing. You can even translate line by line if you wish!
