Imperfect is used when time in the past is not specified: "I played basketball"/"I used to walk on the beach."

Preterite is used when time in the past is specified: "She woke up at seven o'clock"/"The town was built in 1792."

Preterite is also used as an "interruption" tense (the bolded words would be conjugated in the preterite tense). "I was dancing with him when the phone rang"/"While we fought the monitor lizards, Blake called 911."

Imperfect could be thought of as a line in the past, preterite as a dot.

Preterite:

-ar: é, aste, ó, amos, asteis, aron

-er, -ir: í, iste, ió, imos, isteis, ieron

Imperfect:

-ar: aba, abas, aba, ábamos, abais, aban

-er, -ir: ía, ías, ía, íamos, íais, ían
