Here is something I read on a website called Yabla (in their spanish lessons tab- available for free to all). It talks about a few other uses for Andar rather than walk:

¿En qué anda ahora ella? We might be tempted to translate this as :In what does she walk now?" but clearly that won't cut it. Checking any dictionary, we find that andar has more meanings than just "to walk." For example, you are no doubt familar with ¿Cómo andas?(How's it going?). The question Melina wants to convey is What is she up to now? This week andar pops up again when our young protagonist states Ando sin plata. He means not so much "I walk without money," but rather, "I've got no money."

Pues la diferencia es que uno simplemente es dar pasos (andar), y el otro con un objetivo o distancia determinada (caminar). Ejemplos:

  • Hoy he estudiado mucho, voy a ANDAR un rato para despejarme.

  • Hoy iré al trabajo CAMINANDO.

I'll take a stab at it - I believe "Andar" just means to go, via any means of transportation and perhaps also can mean "go away." "Caminar" means specifically to walk. Andar can maybe also mean walk, but not JUST walk.

I've heard "andar bicicleta," which I guess is an example of "to go" rather than "to walk." Thanks for that!

No difference, andar and caminar is "to walk" in portuguese too, but portuguese is " andar and caminhar " we use both words for the same thing ...
