Guide to Formatting on Duolingo!

Welcome!

This is pretty much the post that stingerbee12 made a very long time ago, but it's old and not stickied so not many people know about it. I decided to bring it back up (and update it a little) because I've seen many questions of people saying stuff like "How did you make it bold like that" etc... Original Post , Duolingo Wiki formatting guide

Specifically for new Duolingo users who wonder how in certain comments or discussions, how certain text are bold or italicized or etc. Well this guide should help answer that question and shows examples!

Bold text: **Bold** which becomes Bold

Italic Text: *Italic* which becomes Italic

Quote Text: >Hello, World and all who inhabit it! which becomes

Hello, World and all who inhabit it!

(Once you are done quoting, just make a new line and don't use the ">" at beginning of new line)

Linking (embedding) a URL: [Click Here](http://www.duolingo.com) becomes Click Here

In other words: [Whatever Text to Display to Click](URL of website)

Image Linking: ![](http://i.imgur.com/gicahZv.png) becomes

In other words: ![]( URL of uploaded image)

(Remember to first upload your image to imgur (or a different photo uploading service) and then copy the specific link they give you and insert it properly. Don't forget the "!")

Unorganized List:

* Test 1

* Test 2

(Sorry for the not properly indented explanation)

becomes

  • Test 1

  • Test 2

(Make sure there is a space after the asterisk or "*" and make sure you make a new line after each list. So basically every line should have an * and then space and then the name of list. Hope you understand. Sorry for the weird spaces in the unorganized list explanation. Highlighting mistakes)

The long line thingies (Don't know what's it officially called)

`___' (3 underscores, no spaces) becomes

Cancelling the format

As you know, **Bold** will become Bold, but you can cancel it by adding a backslash in front of it.*\*\Bold** becomes *\Bold*

There are many more formatting codes but this is the basic to let you know on how the formatting works. I hope this guide helped you and if you see any errors or have questions, feel free to tell/ask. Thanks!

Also additional from Samsta! Thanks!

Extra from Samsta:

You could also add: Italics and Bold which becomes Italics and Bold

This text is written by placing a back-tick ( ` ) on both sides of the selected text. (The back-tick can usually be found to the left of the 1 key, under the esc key [upper left corner])

Note: This doesn't work on activity, only on discussion.

Hope you found this useful!

To make a single line space between paragraphs, at the end of your line, put two spaces then enter.

To make a double line space, just hit enter twice.

You're missing one that always seems to get left off these list.
To make a single line space between paragraphs, at the end of your line, put two spaces then enter.

To make a double line space, just hit enter twice.

Also, it's probably important enough to mention that when you want to share an image, you need to upload it to some type of picture sharing server on the web. I'm a big fan of Imgur because it is easy, provides you with the correct syntax (just add an ! before the Markdown link) and strips off personal information.

Also, here is a good post on Adding an Image

(..and it may be time to change that image, since duolingo no longer offers duels, it could be confusing for new users wondering what it is)

You may want to put the quote marks into the first lot. It's not super helpful at the moment. :P

Something is missing from the description of 'http://duolingo.wikia.com/wiki/Formatting' namely if you want to start a new line, you end a line with two or more spaces, then type return. See the original: Markdown Syntax

How do you link to a specific post within a thread and not to the beginning of the thread? For example when I receive an email notification of a new comment the link in it takes me directly to the comment. The link has a "comment id" in its url, so how do I locate/identify that comment id?

    January 9, 2016

    https://www.duolingo.com/wazzie

This is possible, but a bit of a process. I'm not sure if there is a better way, but this is how I do it:

(I use Chrome, but other browsers should be similar)

    1. Highlight some text in the comment you want to link
    2. Right Click, and select 'Inspect'
    3. It will look like this:
      this
where the red circle indicates your comment number. A good way to make sure you have the right comment number is to put your mouse over the area circled in red (in the example), and the comment you want to link should be the first highlighted.
    4. Next, put the web address into the following format: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/XXXXXXXXXX$comment_id=YYYYYYYYY
where XXXXXXXX = discussion link and YYYYYYYYY = comment link.

The result will look like this: Wazzie gave great advice here
    https://www.duolingo.com/comment/7405804$comment_id=7406034

I hope I described it okay, but if you need additional help, let me know.

A while back (maybe a month ago) there were several post on "extreme" formatting (mostly excessive colors and fonts), and shortly after that, DL removed several of the formatting options.
It seemed that Heading 1 got caught up in that removal.

Just to clarify, you need a "back tick" both at the beginning and at the end of the text you want highlighted. Also, If you want to also add bold and italics, you need to have the "back tick" after the 3 asterisks (ie stars) at the the beginning of the text, (and before the 3 asterisks at the end of the text.)

For a horizontal line you don't need 7 underscore characters. 3 is enough. For example.

Bold-Italic can be done with 3 * characters on each side. Like this

There is another way to italicize. Just put _ on either side of the word. Like this

Alternative way to bold: Just put 2 _ on either side of the word. Like this

Alternative way for bold italic: 3 _ on either side: Like this

Now if you are 29 and younger and have a social media app, you may known of the Duolingo memes for a very long time. But you could possibly be new that it would be important to post something like this? That would be the April Fools joke of Duolingo Push. Duolingo Push was a joke made by the company to join its users on fun of the memes but the unexpected reaction, this caused to meme to go viral on the internet, mainly Instagram and Twitter.

This can be very good for business and Duolingo could even get more users when it reaches meme Review which is a meme series hosted by Felix Kjiberg aka (Pewdiepie) who has the largest subscribers in the world with 93,000,000 subscribers and soon to be 100,000,000. This would make him have more subscribers than any of the population of European countries (excluding Russia).

This could be the boost to get Duolingo off the ground a bit, I don't expect a big change but I expect some. What do you think about this? How do you think this will impact Duolingo's future?
