¿"In the end" o "at the end"?

Mientras veía una serie televisiva, me topé con esta duda: ¿cuándo decir "In the end" o "at the end"?

  • In the end: finally, after a long time.

In the end, I got a visa for Russia.

We were fighting for a long time, but in the end we went home.

In the end, everything worked out for the best.

There were explosions and more. In the end, the movie was worth it because of the murder we watched at the end.

  • At the end: at the point where something stops.

I think the film’s a bit weak at the end.

At the end of July.

At the end of the trip.

At the end of the movie.

There were explosions and there was one murder at the end of the movie.

Your examples are good ones. There is one other situation in which "in the end" is often used.

  • I hope for result A.
  • I believe that result B will happen.
  • a surprise happens, and so the situation changes, and result A happens.

For example: "We didn't leave our house early enough to get to the airport on time. And then there was bad traffic and that delayed us even more. But in the end, we did not miss the plane because our flight was delayed by three hours."
