Almost all the time, the German J sound is the same as the English Y sound. There are exceptions, but they're probably all originally foreign words. The J sound in der Job is pronounced just like in English, but the B sound is still pronounced like in German (as a P sound).

I never thought about it that way but it's kind of accurate, yes. Seems to work.

Ja = ya

Juli = you-lee

Jesus = yeh-sus
