Dia daoibh!

Welcome to Day 13 of the SnaG challenge. Today, as St. Patrick's Day weekend gets under way, we are looking at all things Irish!

Challenge 13 - Dúshlán 13

Today's challenge is to write about something Irish!

  • Challenge: Write about something IRISH!
  • Theme: Ireland
  • Top Prize: 17 lingots (every entrant will also get 3 lingots!)

Write about something (anything!) Irish. You can write about Guinness, potatoes, Dublin, the Blarney stone, U2, hurling, Michael D. Higgins or the Giant's Causeway. As long as it's Irish themed, anything goes! Note the following:

  • The winner will be chosen on the basis of accuracy, creativity and overall attempt.
  • Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
  • The skills "Ireland 1" and "Ireland 2" from the base Duolingo tree will be helpful to you. Maybe refresh those skills for some help.
  • Beginners: 3 or 4 sentences is more than enough! Just give it a go :)
  • Intermediate/Advanced: We'd hope to see a decent paragraph or so, but whatever you can is good :)
  • You have until Saturday evening for this challenge :)

Real World Mini-Challenge

Tweet as Gaeilge with the hashtags #SnaG2015, #duolingo and #Gaeilge!

I Want More

Grand out:

Irish Song of the Days

"Take Me To Church” le Hozier as Gaeilge

Also, though not in Irish, why not enjoy some Irish music for St. Patrick's Day weekend?

  • St. Paddy's Day Playlist
  • Other noteworthy artists: Kodaline, the Script, the Coronas, Hozier, Thin Lizzy, U2 (obviously), the Cranberries and so much more!

Seanfhocal an lae

"Wait a sec, Alex. What's a seanfhocal?"

Well, quite simply, a seanfhocal is an Irish proverb. They are pretty fun to learn and I'll be teaching you one each day from now until the 17th! They are a nice way to decorate your speech and you will hear/see them used quite often. Today's seanfhocal is a personal favourite of mine:

Ní hé lá na báistí lá na bpáistí

But wait! There's more!

The Day 12 speaking challenge is still open! You have until Sunday to post your entries. If you are interested, post your entry here

Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat!

Bain triail aisti! Surprise yourself!

I think it's mostly down to how it is taught in schools (generally not very well). People can find it hard or boring in school, hence the disliking. That being said however, many people would like the language more if they were taught differently. Lots of people i meet that dislike it want to like it :P

Táim ina gcónaí I gContae Ciarraí, tá sé an an áit is álainn sa Éireann. Tá a lán rud a dhéanamh, tá an radharc go han-deas ar fad. Tá Fungie an dheilf sa Daingean Uí Chuis, tá an loch agus na sléibhte sa Cill Airne, tá an Rós sa Trá Lí, tá trá um ar bith an cósta. Thiocfadh ar Ciarraí agus sprain a dhéanamh. Slán leat.

Not sure if this counts as Sufficiently Irish, but anyway here goes:

Éireannach an carachtar sa litríocht ar fad is fearr liom: Stiofán Maitiurain, sna leabhair Phádraig Uí Bhriain*. Bhí sé dochtúir, máinlia cabhlaigh, agus gníomhaire faisnéise, ag troid i gcoinne Napoléon Bonaparte. Sna bhlianta 1800-1815, sheol sé le a chara mhór, Jack Aubrey, a bhí a chaptaen freisin.

*Tá a fhios agam nár raibh an t-údar Éireannach, ach bhí ainm Éireannach aige, agus bhí an carachtar fíor-Éireannach.

Ceapaimse go mba chóir dhuit amhráin atá i nGaeilge ar dtús a chur anseo. Tá go leor amhráin mhaithe ann, agus tá siad, i mo thuairimse, i bhad níos fearr ná cinn Béarla aistríthe go Gaeilge. Cén fáth nach dtaispeánann tú anseo iad?

Taispeánaim. Mar shampla, thaispeáin mé "An Mhaighdean Mhara" inné ach ní raibh ceann agam inniu. Gheobhaidh me ceann nó dhó agus taispeánfaidh me anseo iad. Ach, chun an fhírinne a rá, is maith liom na cinn aistrithe.

Mar go bhfuil Lá na Máithreacha a mbeidh ann amárach, ba mhaith liom tréithe na máithreacha Éireannacha a phlé. B'fhéidir go mbeidh sé seo suimúil le haghaidh na daoine anseo nach bhfuil as Éirinn! Éistigí suas! Bímid, muintir na hÉireann an-bhródúil as ár gcuid máithreacha. Bíonn ard-mheas againn dóibh, cé a thug aire dúinn ó bhíomar inár linbh go dtí muid inár tithe féin lenár gclainne féin. Is í an máthair an croí den teaghlach. Seo prófíl gairid den meán Mamaí na hÉireann:

Rudaí a dtaitníonn leo: - Tae. Go leor leor tae. Ólann mo Mhamaí fhéin cúig cupán (ar a laighid) gach lá. - Cúlchaint. Go háirithe faoi dhaoine a fhuair bás le déanaí. Agus scannal an Pharóiste. - Aifreann (Chaitliceach). Is daoine an-reiligiúnach iad an cuid is mó máithreacha Éireannacha. Nuair a labhraíonn sagart leo, ó, mo chroí, an sceitimín! - Ag tabhairt bia dá gcuid páistí. Faighimid dinnéir ollmhóra. - Nuair atá "aimsir iontach don triomadóireacht" ann. - Ag coinneáil plátaí "maithe"-"don cuairteoirí!" - Ag taispeáint an "spúnóg adhmaid" chun tú a bhuail leis ar an tóin agus tú dána.

Rudaí nach dtaitníonn leo: - Nuair a itheann tú na brioscaí le haghaidh "na cuairteoirí!" - Nuair a chuirtear salachar an an úrlár agus í tar éis é a ghlanadh - faigheann tú an "spúnóg adhmaid" mar thoradh!

Frásaí: - "Nach iontach an lá é don triomadóireacht?" - "Íosa, Muire is Íosaf!" - "Ó, é féin síos an bhóthar? Cheap mé go bhfuair sé bás blianta ó shin." - "Ar dúirt tú urnaí go Naomh Antóin?" (nuair nach bhfuil tú in ann rud éigin a aimsiú) - "An ólfaidh tú tae? Ah, ólfaidh tú."

Mar atá le feiceáil go shoiléir, is aobhinn linn ár Mamaí Eireannacha! :D
