...we often call tortoise "tartaruga", but technically, "tartaruga" is that living in water (the most common way to refer to them is "tartaruga marinha -- turtle of the sea", and "cágado" is that living on land.

So, turtle = tartaruga, tortoise = cágado, but often cágado is called tartaruga.
