You can use option + some letters to "pre-set" a character to use on the next keypress.

For instance: Pressing option + e will give you an accent dash in yellow, it will use that on whatever letter you use next when appliccable. So option + e followed by another e will produce: é.

So far I've used (i will use a random letter to demonstrate the addition)

option + e = é | option + u = ö | option + n = ñ |

you can use the option + ` to use accent markings the other way (left instead of right).

I'm sure there are many more, but I didn't need anything else so far so I didn't bother checking. Google for "mac special characters" and I'm sure you will find a lot.

I find that just holding down the key of the letter brings up a pop up menu of accented characters for all (common) languages. I then type in the number of which one I want. On the phone I hold down and slide to pick. It's built-in to OSX and very easy.

first time hear of it. thnx do you happen to know how Spanish natives type the language? waiting for a poping up is convenient under most osx apps but won't do under terminal vim.
