Could I offer you a short old one to work on Spanish double senses?

Una chica pasea por la calle con un gato en brazos.

Un señor se le acerca.

Señor: Araña?

Chica: No, no! Gato!

Araña: spider / third pers. sing. "It scratches" "arañar"

"tiene la costumbre " and "tiene por costumbre" definitely sound better than "tiene costumbre", but I would normally prefer the much shorter alternative "suele ir al café con sus amigos" (infinitive "soler", its defective conjugation can be found here: http://lema.rae.es/drae/srv/search?id=FrFvLJpmzVcRjX5a9VbF )

ha I'm no expert. "tiene la costumbre de ir" gives results at https://books.google.com/ngrams searching in Spanish books and without the "la" there are no results. So the formal way probably is to use the "la".

In fact, the right formal use is "tener por costumbre hacer algo"(+verb in infinitive without any previous preposition).

But you could hear "tener costumbre de" or "tener la costumbre de", always with the same meaning "have the habit of, be in the habit of" . The lattest can be used in a negative sense : "Él tiene la mala costumbre de tirar papeles al suelo".

But you cannot say "tiene por mala costumbre" (it sounds so weird!)

I'm spanish, and we usually don't say "tiene costumbre", we would say ¿Suele ir al café con sus amigos?. Tiene costumbre is a formal way of saying it. ;)
