I answered "comía" instead of estuve comiendo. Shouldn't that also be a correct solution?

That is what I wrote. Any possible correct answer should be accepted so I reported it. Another correct answer would be "Ese día estaba comiendo en mi casa."

was eating in English seems possibly either imperfect or past imperfect in Spanish but DL seems to want only past imperfect, as more literal, i.e. word for word?

I've been asking them to provide context, which does not seem to me a hard thing if they're pulling these sentences off the internet, but I don't know their process. I do see it getting better, even in the few months I've been doing it.
