Yeah, you're right. The basic sentiment is "I don't care whether he comes or not." so "...it's all the same to me" or "...it doesn't matter to me". Something along those lines.

Es ist mir egal = "I don't care" (about that.) Oh-- "TO me" (in English), rather than "for me."

I don't think "I don't care" and "it does not bother me" are quite the same (though they're close). In German: "es ist mir egal, ob..." = "I don't care if/whether..."; I think that "es stört mich nicht, ob..." = "it doesn't bother me if..." , Of course, there are lots of other ways to express this in both languages.
