First of all, you can watch almost every Turkish TV program online, legally, on the website of the TV channels, for example
of course, you don't find subtitles there.
Many Turkish TV series became very popular internationally in the last years, especially in the middle East but some like "Muhteşem Yüzyıl" have been broadcasted in about 40 countries.
Some youtube channels provide subtitles for some of those popular TV series. Here are links to some:
- Ezel: Crime drama, I think it is a really good one :) on youtube
- Muhteşem Yüzyıl: Magnificient Century, it is about the Ottoman Period, Sultan Suleiman and his wife Hürrem Sultan (Roxalena) on youtube
- Aşk-ı Memnu: Forbidden Love, a romantic drama on youtube
- Kuzey Güney: Drama, on youtube
Personally I like many other Turkish TV series more than the ones listed above, but unfortunately I couldn't find any subtitled versions.
- if you are not into drama, Avrupa Yakası might be for you, it is a funny sitcom. There are no subtitles but experienced learners can give it a try as it is not so complicated. If you watch it, beware of the silly language used by "Selin" though :)
- Hatırla Sevgili, here on youtube is a great TV show, where you can learn a bit about the Turkish political history, although there is also a love story. Only a few episodes are available with subtitles, unfortunately.
- Şaşıfelek Çıkmazı and Yeditepe İstanbul were great TV series, partially dramatic, partially funny, stories of people in a neighborhood. No subtitles :(
- For the beginning, you can also try cartoons. You can find many American cartoons dubbed in Turkish (just google), or watch some Turkish ones like Pepe I am annoyed by this one, but should be good for learners :)
Feel free to recommend other TV shows!
As of Jan 1, 2017, the Turkish shows:
Muhteşem Yüzyıl (Magnificent Century), Ezel, Karadayı, Kaçak, Seyit ve Şura, Mahmut ile Meryem, Çalıkuşu (Lovebird), Limon and Oli (for children), Aşk ve Ceza (Love and Punishment), Son (The End), Bir Çocuk Sevdim (under 'The Girl I Loved'), and Binbir Gece (1001 Nights) are now ALL officially on the US version of Netflix with English subs.
Aşk ve Ceza is an excellent program, well acted and highly addictive! I've picked up a lot of Turkish just from the English subtitles. Bad news: Netflix US has only Season 1 (as 43 episodes approximately 1 hour long), ending when Savaş learns that Yasemin had his baby and didn't tell him. There are 62 episodes (about 2 hours long) to the program, however they are on YouTube, though no subtitles that I can find. Have asked Netflix Dec. 2016 to get the rest of the episodes.
They've abridged the other programs I've watched as well (Ezel, Karadayı, Kaçak). I'm assuming they've done it to make them more "TV adaptable" or easier to binge. I watched the original episodes on YouTube too, and there isn't much missing from the main theme of the shows. I'd recommend watching the originals of course, but if someone wants the subs, the Netflix abridged versions are still excellent.
I would like to ask Netflix for the rest of the seasons of a couple other shows too. Could you explain the process? Is there a link? Thanks.
I called the Netflix help desk and they emailed me a link. Unfortunately I don't have it in my email anymore (or I would post it), but if you try the same process, that should work. I think Netflix is breaking the Aşk ve Ceza episodes in half. When I went looking for episode 44, it turned out to be the second half of episode 24 or thereabouts on YouTube.
Alternatively you can watch Samanyolu TV or MC TV if you want to know what religious brainwashing is like in Turkish :P
For laughs I'd also recommend the cult series Gerçek Kesit (episodes can easily be found on Youtube) or Büyük Buluşma for the hilariously bad acting (which is also dubbed in English as The Final Glance)
Hi everyone. Just joined duo lingo for my Turkish. I love the system. Thanks to those involved, great job! :) I love Turkish serials! Right now I watch Param Parca, Kara Para Ask and Karagul. They are easy to follow even if you feel your Turkish is weak. Not sure if any of the ones I watch have sub titles. Kolay gelsin. :)
"Çemberimde Gül Oya" is the best series i have ever watched: http://www.ddizi1.com/izle/5107/cemberimde-gul-oya-1-bolum.htm
thanks, videos with turkish subtitles are really difficult to find.
short stories with turkish subtitles:
I have been looking around a bit for something really reaaally easy in Turkish. Since I use Peppa Pig for my German training I wanted to see it in Turkish as well. They don't speak too fast and speak clearly.

Thanks a lot Selcen for all this information. I have just started learning Turkish and I have to admit - am falling in love with it. I give huge credits to the show EZEL. #LOVEDIT I was wondering if you know whether the other show KARADAYI - (also with Kenan Imirzaglou in main role) is also available with English (or Italian ) subtitles. (PS: I know this post is a year old but I am hoping that you are still able to respond).
Thanks a million! :)
Nobody can make TV series / soaps like the Turks; there is just no competing with them.
So far I have watched 8 Turkish series and all were good. Besides the ones mentioned in the OP, I recommend Binbir Gece, Kurt Seyit ve Sura (short -- only about 25 bölüm), Kara Para Aşk and Fatmagul'un Suçu Ne. Of the newer ones, the first season of Muhteşem Yüzyıl Kösem has already been subtitled in English, Spanish and probably many other languages. It is pretty awesome, if you can stomach the excessive killing.
I'm looking for a new one to watch with subtitles, I'm not ready to watch them completely in Turkish yet. I can't press the turtle button on youtube :(
Do they have South Park translated to Turkish? Because I have watched the episodes in English many times and I will know what they're saying. I'll look it up.
TRT has many different Turkish series with Turkish subtitles, including children's programs, which many will find easier to follow: http://engelsiztrt.tv/?utm_source=trtnettrutm_medium=medyapanelutm_content=linkutm_campaign=nocampaign
If you click on the Youtube icon in TRT's video player, you can watch the episodes on Youtube instead. This allows you to slow the player down and still view it with SUBS, but avoid the audio narration and the sign language.
i stomached it until the end of the first season. it is not like the Muhtesem series which focused on love and interpersonal stuff. this one is more like Sultan Erdogan's propagandic message to his supporters (see how great we turks are, we turks are gonna master you for the next x hundreds of years)- sorry. thanks but no thanks.
Hey guys. I’m not sure whether this link was shared before. In any case, I find this YouTube channel (Drama Fanatics) very helpful. The subtitles are accurate and clear. It’s great that they have all episodes of Muhteşem Yüzyıl too. Hope this helps.
