Turkish TV

First of all, you can watch almost every Turkish TV program online, legally, on the website of the TV channels, for example

of course, you don't find subtitles there.

Many Turkish TV series became very popular internationally in the last years, especially in the middle East but some like "Muhteşem Yüzyıl" have been broadcasted in about 40 countries.

Some youtube channels provide subtitles for some of those popular TV series. Here are links to some:

Personally I like many other Turkish TV series more than the ones listed above, but unfortunately I couldn't find any subtitled versions.

  • if you are not into drama, Avrupa Yakası might be for you, it is a funny sitcom. There are no subtitles but experienced learners can give it a try as it is not so complicated. If you watch it, beware of the silly language used by "Selin" though :)
  • Hatırla Sevgili, here on youtube is a great TV show, where you can learn a bit about the Turkish political history, although there is also a love story. Only a few episodes are available with subtitles, unfortunately.
  • Şaşıfelek Çıkmazı and Yeditepe İstanbul were great TV series, partially dramatic, partially funny, stories of people in a neighborhood. No subtitles :(
  • For the beginning, you can also try cartoons. You can find many American cartoons dubbed in Turkish (just google), or watch some Turkish ones like Pepe I am annoyed by this one, but should be good for learners :)

Feel free to recommend other TV shows!

Ezel was an AWESOME show...my husband credits it with activating his Turkish. Also, I must recommend my guilty pleasure.....Medcezir- the Turkish "OC"....on youtube with English subtitles.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/rjbuz

I'd love to watch all of these with Turkish captions/subtitles in order to see the words spelled out while hearing them. Does anybody know any particular Turkish series that have Turkish captions available online? :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Selcen_Ozturk

I don't think that's easy to find unfortunately. You can only find songs with lyrics I think.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Shahrazad26

I've heard there are Turkish movies subtitled in Turkish for people like us (or deaf people). The tv series, yok.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KaraGulsah

If you can find, find Şahsiyet. It is the best f-ing Tv show to me. Not only Turkish people but the whole world must watch it.

Selling too hard :\

This is a great post! I hope you'll sticky it in the Turkish course eventually :D

As of Jan 1, 2017, the Turkish shows:

Muhteşem Yüzyıl (Magnificent Century), Ezel, Karadayı, Kaçak, Seyit ve Şura, Mahmut ile Meryem, Çalıkuşu (Lovebird), Limon and Oli (for children), Aşk ve Ceza (Love and Punishment), Son (The End), Bir Çocuk Sevdim (under 'The Girl I Loved'), and Binbir Gece (1001 Nights) are now ALL officially on the US version of Netflix with English subs.

Enjoy!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mariecj56

Aşk ve Ceza is an excellent program, well acted and highly addictive! I've picked up a lot of Turkish just from the English subtitles. Bad news: Netflix US has only Season 1 (as 43 episodes approximately 1 hour long), ending when Savaş learns that Yasemin had his baby and didn't tell him. There are 62 episodes (about 2 hours long) to the program, however they are on YouTube, though no subtitles that I can find. Have asked Netflix Dec. 2016 to get the rest of the episodes.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/theodhoraqis

They've abridged the other programs I've watched as well (Ezel, Karadayı, Kaçak). I'm assuming they've done it to make them more "TV adaptable" or easier to binge. I watched the original episodes on YouTube too, and there isn't much missing from the main theme of the shows. I'd recommend watching the originals of course, but if someone wants the subs, the Netflix abridged versions are still excellent.

I would like to ask Netflix for the rest of the seasons of a couple other shows too. Could you explain the process? Is there a link? Thanks.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mariecj56

I called the Netflix help desk and they emailed me a link. Unfortunately I don't have it in my email anymore (or I would post it), but if you try the same process, that should work. I think Netflix is breaking the Aşk ve Ceza episodes in half. When I went looking for episode 44, it turned out to be the second half of episode 24 or thereabouts on YouTube.

Do you know where to watch Muhteşem Yüzyıl (Magnificent Century) All Episodes with english Subtitles? I missed the episodes... i reach untul Episode 60 :(

I was really hoping to find here my all time fav. Calikusu ; the main actors are some handsome; and well of course I'm in love with Kemran

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Selcen_Ozturk

do you mean the new version? It started good but then it got so weird that they cancelled it suddenly... :) (oh my god, I don't even watch most of these but I watch the trailers sometimes and it is enough :D)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/spanishamina

I love old version, and the new version I watched like two seasons so far I like it; all I hope one day I will be able to read Resat Nuri Guntekin's novel in Turkish )

Paramparça was pretty bomb.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/bats1994

Alternatively you can watch Samanyolu TV or MC TV if you want to know what religious brainwashing is like in Turkish :P

http://www.samanyolu.tv/canli-tv http://www.kure.tv/kanallar/mc-tv/canli-yayin

For laughs I'd also recommend the cult series Gerçek Kesit (episodes can easily be found on Youtube) or Büyük Buluşma for the hilariously bad acting (which is also dubbed in English as The Final Glance)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCWBBeinf_Y (Gerçek Kesit) http://www.kure.tv/dizi/buyuk-bulusma (almost every single episode of Büyük Buluşma is available on the link)

If you are good enough to watch these and if you like comedy, you can watch Çok Güzel Hareketler Bunlar (a turkish variety show)

here: https://www.youtube.com/user/Bkmmutfaktv/videos

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/yalcintarkan

http://www.canlitv.com/ has a group of tv channels' live streams too. You can also find trailers of some popular TV series

Hi everyone. Just joined duo lingo for my Turkish. I love the system. Thanks to those involved, great job! :) I love Turkish serials! Right now I watch Param Parca, Kara Para Ask and Karagul. They are easy to follow even if you feel your Turkish is weak. Not sure if any of the ones I watch have sub titles. Kolay gelsin. :)

Also guys, I recommend: "Medcezir" A really good one especially for teenagers :) you can have fun.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/M4rt4a

Thank you for posting that! I've got really into Muhteşem Yüzyıl lately, and I was just about to start looking for some other series to watch, so now I can just choose one of your recommendations :)

Thank you Selcen! These are all wonderful. I don't know where to find it but one show I really liked was Menekşe ile Halil.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jasminedesi16

Yes it was way over the top sometimes but it was fun to watch :P

I recommend everybody to watch Ezel. I watched it 3 years ago, when one of the local channels broadcasted it, and I think I'll watch it once again, but in Turkish!

KanalD also has accessible videos on http://engelsiz.kanald.com.tr - subtitles, sign language, and/or audio description (where a voice describes what is visible on screen, e.g. what a new person looks like or that the scene has changed).

For all you romance lovers; there is a new series called "Kiralık Aşk" and it also has english subtitles on YouTube. They use a lot of idioms commonly-used words that you don't always find in a textbook.

I have been looking around a bit for something really reaaally easy in Turkish. Since I use Peppa Pig for my German training I wanted to see it in Turkish as well. They don't speak too fast and speak clearly.

Thanks a lot Selcen for all this information. I have just started learning Turkish and I have to admit - am falling in love with it. I give huge credits to the show EZEL. #LOVEDIT I was wondering if you know whether the other show KARADAYI - (also with Kenan Imirzaglou in main role) is also available with English (or Italian ) subtitles. (PS: I know this post is a year old but I am hoping that you are still able to respond).

      Thanks a million! :)

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/HeatherOzer

Karadayı is great and I watch it at home but I never saw it with subtitles unfortunately. However, it is still possible watch in Turkish and pick up a lot.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Shahrazad26

Nobody can make TV series / soaps like the Turks; there is just no competing with them.

So far I have watched 8 Turkish series and all were good. Besides the ones mentioned in the OP, I recommend Binbir Gece, Kurt Seyit ve Sura (short -- only about 25 bölüm), Kara Para Aşk and Fatmagul'un Suçu Ne. Of the newer ones, the first season of Muhteşem Yüzyıl Kösem has already been subtitled in English, Spanish and probably many other languages. It is pretty awesome, if you can stomach the excessive killing.

I'm looking for a new one to watch with subtitles, I'm not ready to watch them completely in Turkish yet. I can't press the turtle button on youtube :(

Do they have South Park translated to Turkish? Because I have watched the episodes in English many times and I will know what they're saying. I'll look it up.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CailinHeffernan

I've finished all the episodes of Binbir Gece on Netflix and they left off with the episode where the wedding is interrupted. Do you know where I can watch the rest of the series with English subs? My Turkish is not up to speed.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QuanitaA

Where did you watch Fatmagul? Looking for it everywhere!

i would like to watch "Şubat" with english subtitles

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/bettylouise

I'm following Asi with English subs on Youtube. The story is terribly predictable so you can concentrate on the language.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KuriousBean

TRT has many different Turkish series with Turkish subtitles, including children's programs, which many will find easier to follow: http://engelsiztrt.tv/?utm_source=trtnettrutm_medium=medyapanelutm_content=linkutm_campaign=nocampaign

If you click on the Youtube icon in TRT's video player, you can watch the episodes on Youtube instead. This allows you to slow the player down and still view it with SUBS, but avoid the audio narration and the sign language.

Hi, I found out about http://www.startv.com.tr/engelsiz but unfortunately this link is not working anymore, the one for KanalD and TRT is still working though. Does anyone know if some other link for Star TV is still available? Thanks.

I thought Avrupa Yakası was a perfect suggestion as it was funny and entertaining. Burhan is hysterical.

i stomached it until the end of the first season. it is not like the Muhtesem series which focused on love and interpersonal stuff. this one is more like Sultan Erdogan's propagandic message to his supporters (see how great we turks are, we turks are gonna master you for the next x hundreds of years)- sorry. thanks but no thanks.

Hey guys. I’m not sure whether this link was shared before. In any case, I find this YouTube channel (Drama Fanatics) very helpful. The subtitles are accurate and clear. It’s great that they have all episodes of Muhteşem Yüzyıl too. Hope this helps.
