FOR ONCE I ACTUALLY KNOW A THING and this sentence made my history major/etymology nerd self do a happy dance :D

An "icon" is an image, as in the icon on a desktop representing a link (for those familiar with the Orthodox church, you may know this comes from Greek, and tends to refer to religious imagery, usually portraits of saints.)

"-klasm" means to break something.

If the Wikipedia page is TL;DR, this is basically when the church faced opposition, and religious imagery was literally destroyed by those opponents. It was big during the Reformation, and there were also earlier ones in the Byzantine world. Fascinating, terrible, etymological, historical, part of a balanced breakfast. Hope this helped :D

Yes, during the Byzantine Empire's time it went through various periods of iconoclasm, where religious symbols were destroyed and used of them opposed by the government. That is where I know this word from, cool learning it in Dutch now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iconoclasm For all that don't know what it is.

The "beeldenstorm" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beeldenstorm) is considered to be an important part in Dutch history and as such everyone in school learns about it. But I understand that for a lot of people on Duolingo trying to learn Dutch it might be the first time they hear about this.

Ja en het begin van de 80 jarige oorlog, al is dat voor se vertaling niet van belang.

Why is "After the Iconoclastic Fury, the king sent soldiers" not accepted? It appears as a translation for "beeldenstorm" when you hover on the word itself.
