Why is this not benim cilt kanserimi vardı, or is that in fact also possible?

first of all grammatically it would be " benim cilt kanserim vardı", without i.

but as this is not really something you own, it is really weird to say it like this and we never use this formulation for diseases.

we actually use it but not for the diseases that are so serious. like bel fıtığım vardı. migrenim vardı. but of course we never say kanserim vardı.

grip or nezle are also not serious diseases but you wouldn't say "nezlem vardı", "gribim vardı". Let's say you cannot use it for most of the diseases, and anyway "bende X vardı" is always correct and it sounds much better so let the user learn it that way.
